People in rural areas earn their living in various ways. Some work on farms while others earn their living on non- farm activities. Working on farms involves operations such as preparing the land, sowing, weeding and harvesting of crops. We depend on nature for the growth of these crops. Hence life revolves around certain seasons. People are busy during sowing and harvesting and less so at other times. Rural people in different regions of the country grow different crops.

i.) Seasonal unemployment takes place mostly in agricultural sector. When there is no work in the fields, farm labourers remain idle and have no work to earn money.
ii.) Small farmers do not have big land and their produce is not in good quantity which can fetch them enough money to buy essential items for farming. Thus, they borrow money from money lenders to purchase things like seeds, fertilizers and pesticides.
iii.) It is a type of farming in the hills where the land on a hill slope is cut into flat plots and changed into steps. The sides of each plot are raised in a such manner that the plot holds water. Rice is cultivated in this manner.

All these activities are done to earn extra money as only agricultural activities do not help in their subsistence.
ii.) The most important activity near coastal villages are fishing. Most of the villagers use their small boats and go for catching fishes into the sea in the night and return in the morning with their catch. The women gather in the beaches to buy and sell the fishes to the traders who have shops in the town.
