Since ancient times, India is called as the homeland of rivers for being developed besides rivers. At first, people started civilisation beside river for the advantage of using river water in irrigation system and using water for many other purposes. We cannot live without freshwater and the largest percentage of it we get from rivers. But with the increasing urbanisation, industrialisation and global warming pollution rate in river water is also increasing. So, we must to think about the possible ways of conserving river water for our own good. In this composition, we will discuss about the various important sides of rivers and how we can protect the environment by saving rivers.
Significance of Rivers:
Rivers are the largest source of rivers without which mankind and any living creature cannot live. Flora and fauna of water body keeps the balance of our environment by delivering natural resources. To protect their natural habitat we should save river water from getting polluted. In earlier time, people realised the fertility of river valleys for which they started, living in the valleys and growing crops. Rivers originates from mountains and carry rocks, soil and sand while flow in natural motion somewhere as fast and somewhere as slow. After crossing mountains, plateaus when rivers comes to plain they become slow and silent by storing its flowing products. As a result, we get fertile soil beside the banks of rivers. Farmers within India depend on rivers for irrigations purposes in agriculture. Rivers are used as the cheapest mean of transport by which we can communicate with far places in short time. By building bridges over rivers we can connect through railways, roadways easily.
Ways of River Conservation:
In India, rivers are categorised based on its origins within different regions. Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra are originated from mountains as glaciers and flown towards west side. Godavari, Krishna, Tapti, Mahanadi etc. are peninsular rivers which are originated in different parts of southern India. But nowadays many important rivers have become narrow for the stored soil besides its banks. Rivers are also getting polluted much with excessive misuse of water which affect us diversely. But we should take steps for stopping river pollution soon. We must use biodegradable products which cannot harm environment after becoming garbage. Industries should release chemical water into river after clarifying and cooling it properly. Using river water for chemical production must be stopped. Any kind of household garbage and by products should not be thrown in rivers.
Conclusion:
Rivers are natural resources which are providing fresh water constantly. Once it becomes polluted we cannot get back fresh and pure water again. Being a responsible citizen we all should take individual responsibility and become aware about protecting river water. We can bring a great change within environment by encouraging others with proper information about the negative effects of polluting rivers.
