Rip Van Winkle Summary
The story of Rip Van Winkle has been adapted from ‘The legend of Rip van winkle by Washington Irving’. The story is about a good natured man who was lazy. A twist comes into his life & changes his life forever.
Para 1st & Para 2nd “Many many . . . . . . his dog’ introduces us to Rip van winkle. He lived in the foothills of the Kat-skill in a small village. He was a good natured man always ready to help others. He was likes by everyone. The children also loved him because he taught them to fly a kite & shoot marbles. But he was a very lazy man. He did no work & just passed his time with his dog named wolf. His fence of the farm were breaking, weeds grow on his farm but he paid no heed it to. Rather he world walk away into the forest.
The third & fourth Para “One day . . . . like thunder,” describes a very strange thing that happened with him one fine day. Rip was just idlying around & reached to the tip of a mountain. It was late afternoon. He got extremely tired & decided to lay down. As he laid down he started day dreaming. He realised it was almost evening & by the time he would reach the village it would be night. Suddenly he heard some calling his name & to his surprise he saw an old short man with thick hair & grizzled beard walking towards him. He had a barrel & asked help from Rip through actions. Rip hurried to help the stranger. They went further & reached a place of some more old looking people. They wore same dress & had beards of various colours & shapes. They were playing a game but were very serious & silent.
The fifth, sixth, seventh Para “As Rip . . . . village” further describes the incident that happened with rip. The people stopped playing & gazed at rip which frightened him. The man who came with rip emptied his barred into barrel into glasses & offered rip. Rip was very frightened & thirsty & drank some glasses & slowly feel into sleep. Finally he woke up at the place he made the old man. It was a sunny morning. He looked here & there for wolf, called out his name but there was no reply. He then started going to his village.
The 8th to 11th Para finally conclude the story. As he neared his village he met several people but knew none. The villagers even looked surprised after seeing Rip. He then heard come villagers whispering so about his long beard & wrinkled face. He was astonished & discovered his long white beard & wrinkled face. Finally he saw an old lady walking upto him & staring at his face. Then she exclaimed him as Rip Van Winkle, an old neighbour. Rip was awe-struck after hearing her final words, that he returned to the village after 20 long years.
