India has been under colonial rule for several years. The colonising countries were able to use their technological advancements to establish their supremacy over other countries. Resource and raw materials were the main cause of colonial rule. They exploit the natural resources of the region for their own benefits. Because of this, development in the post-independence period does not involve only availability of resources but also technology, quality of human resources and historical experiences of people.

This soil is developed in tropical and subtropical areas which have an alternate wet and dry season. It’s name is derived from a Latin term which means brick. It is formed because of intense leaching and is characterised by a slightly acidic pH. Humus content depends upon the vegetation it carries, i.e. humus content is high under evergreen forest covered land and it is low in sparse vegetation areas.

3.) What is the main problem related to this kind of soil? What are the conservation measures which should be adopted to make the soil suitable for agriculture?
Laterite soil is usually deficient in plant nutrients because of heavy leaching. This makes it unsuitable for agriculture. It is also prone to erosion and degradation because of its location on the landscape. Various soil conservation methods like afforestation, bunding etc makes it suitable for agriculture. It is also useful for tea, coffee, and cashew nut plantations.
