Ans: The Chairman of the Board of Control, Charles Wood in 1854 A.D. made some recommendations for the development of education. The recommendations were later titled “Wood’s Despatch”.

1.) Raja Ram Mohan Roy
Ans: Raja Ram Mohan Roy made many efforts for the development or education to the prevalent superstitious and false rituals. He was in favour of imparting Western Education to the Indians. He was well versed in Bengali, Persian, Sanskrit. Urdu. English and Greek language. He published two newspapers and wrote books in Bengali about grammar, geography, astronomy, and arithmatics. He opened many educational institutions for the progress of the education. On his own expenses he opened an English school and a Vedanata College.
2.) Swami Dayanand Sarasvati
Ans: Swami Dayanand Saraswati was in favour of imparting Sanskrit, vedic education along with western education. He established many schools, colleges and gurukuls in India particularly in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. After the death of Dayanand Saraswati in 1886 a Dayanand Anglo School was opened in Lahore, in his memory. After that in 1889A.D., along with the Anglo school, an Anglo-College was also opened. In it, students were given education of Hindu literature, culture and Vedas. Later, D.A.V. schools were opened in Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar and Kanpur. During the time of Swami Dayanand Saraswati a women’s college was established in Meerut.
3.) Swami Vivekananda
Ans: Swami Vivekananda launched the Rama Krishna Mission. This group established several schools, universities, libraries, and hospitals and for benefit of the community. Swami Ji actively promoted Indian culture in the United States and Europe.
4.) Ishwar Chander Vidyasagar.
Ans: Professor Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was well-known Indian intellectual. He published a book named “Premier Varna Parichaya” in Bengali, which helped to learn languages. He also made significant contributions to education of women.
