(A) Answer the following questions:
(1) Name some important cities of the Harappan Civilisation.
Ans: Some important cities of Harappan Civilisation are – Sanghol, Rohira, —-, Banawali.
(2) What do you know about the social life of the Indus valley people?
Ans: Indus Valley civilisation dates back to 3000 BC and it was an urban civilisation with a highly developed society. People used t grow wheat, rice barley and non-vegetarian food was also eaten as fish hooks were discovered from the remains of this civilisation. The people wore cotton and woolen clothes. Ladies wore jewellery of beads, terrocota and a shawl over their left shoulder. Women also used hair accessories and various cosmetics. Men kept beards and some clean – shower and wore band around their heats. People also used to play various games and various forms of dances were performed by them.
(3) Write a note on the town planning of the Indus Valley Cvilization.
Ans: Indus Valley Civilisation had a modern day well-planned city. The cities were divided into two parts – upper and lower. The upper part contained public building and residential houses of ruling class while the lower part of the city belonged to common people. The drainage system was well developed and the roads were wide and streets interesting at right angles. Houses were mode with bricks and woods with its owner kitchen and bathroom.
(4) What were the causes of the decline of the Harappan Civilization?
Ans: The Harappan Civilisation mainly declined due to the drying of the river Saraswati in 1900 BC which led to the migration of people to the east of Gangetic plains. The continuo flood in the river Indus also led to the decline of this civilisation.
(5) What were the economic life of the Indus Valley Civilization People?
Ans: Agriculture and cattle rearing were the main profession of the people. The remains of ploughed fields from Kalibagan suggests that Indus Valley civilisation used modern agriculture methods. Sheep, goat, bull, camel, buffalo, dog, elephant, horse etc were domesticated. Trades such as internal and external both were carried out.
(6) Write about two cities of Harappan Civilization in Punjab.
Ans:
(i) Rohira: This city was situated in Sangrur district and was excavated in 1976-77 AD. The uteusils, bricks and toys made of clay was found here.
(ii) Surat: This city situated in Ludhiana district, and excavated in 1983-84 A.D. The remains found here gave us information about the last period of Harappan Civilisation.
