(A) Answer the following questions in brief:
(1) What is a map?
Ans: A map is a diagrammatical representation of a place and its physical features and help us to locate a particular address of a place.
(2) What is a Globe?
Ans: Globe is a model of us Earth that represents various continents, oceans and other physical features on it.
(3) Write the difference between a map and a Globe.
Ans: A map is a flat representation of a place on a piece of paper where as a Globe is a three dimensional model of earth.
(4) Why maps were mode? Give their importance.
Ans: Maps were mode to locate a particular place and for studying that place. The importance of map are as follows :-
(a) With the help of the maps the distance between places can be deter mind.
(b) The physical features of a particular place like slope of land, rivers, trade centres, routes etc can be located easily.
(5) Enlist different types of maps.
Ans:
(a) Physical maps – It shows the physical features of a particular place like its mountains, plated us, river etc.
(b) Historical maps – These maps gives us the reference of a particular historical events like – war, voyages, civilisation etc.
(c) Distributional maps – Often known as commodity map that gives us details about various matter like population, agriculture etc.
(d) Topographical maps – This map shows both physical feature and human constructions of a particular place like dams, roads, etc.
(e) Atlas/Thematic maps – These are miniature maps represented in the form of a book generally used in schools.
(6) Make a chart of the conventional symbols.

(7) In coloured maps, with which colour we show mountains, uplands, plains, rivers, forests and show covered hills?
Ans: In colour map, the following colours represented the various physical features.
Mountains – Brown colour, uplands – yellow colour, plains – green, rivers – blue colour, forests – green colour, snow covered hills – white.
(8) What is the use of directions in the maps?
Ans: Direction play a vital role in determining the location of a particular place in the map.
(9) How does scale of the map help us to study the maps?
Ans: A scale states the proportion between the dimensions of the map and the actual places they represent on earth i.e. it provides a correct measurement about the distance between the places.
(10) What is the importance of the key in a map?
Ans: A key is used to explain the various symbols on a map. It allows the readers of the map to understand what the symbol represent on the map.
