(A) Answer the following questions:
(1) What do you know about the Chalukyas of South India?
Ans: The Chalukyas came to power in the Deccan in early 6th Century A.D. with their capital in Vatapi (Bijapur district of Karnataka). The most famous ruler of his dynasty was Pulakeshin – II who conquered many areas in south India and defeated Pallavas of Tamil Nadu. Other notable rulers of this dynasty were – I and his son Kirtivarman Pulakeshin – II died in 642 A.D. after his defeat at the hands of Pallava ruler Narasim havarman-I.
(2) Write a note about the temples of the Chalukyas.
Ans: The Pallavas were great patrons and lovers of art and architecture and got several rock temples excavated at Mahabalipuram on the seacoast. Another Pallava temple at Mahabalipuram is known as the shore temple and another one located at the capital city of Kanchi called Kailasanath.
(3) What do you know about the pallavas?
Ans: The Pallavas ruled Tamil Nadu and parts o Andhra Pradesh with their capital at Kanchipuram near Chennai. One of their ruler named Vishnugopavarman was defeated by Samudragupta. The Pallavas became very powerful in South India when a new dynasty was established by Simhavarman in the last quarter of 6th century A.D. His son Mohendra varman-I was a powerful ruler.
(4) Write about the art and architecture of the Pallavas.
Ans: The Pallavas were great patrons and lovers of art and architectures. They got several rock temples excavated at Mahabalipuram known as the shore temple and Kailasnath temple at Kanchi. There were beautiful sculptures of gods and goddesses statues of the pallava king and queens. Two important books named “Manimekhalal” and “Shilpadikaram” were written during this period. The temples were not only for worship but also were centre of social activities and education, dance, music, painting etc.
