(A) Answer the following questions:
(1) Write about the conquests of Samudragupta.
Ans: Samudragupta was a great ruler of the Gupta Age who conquered a very large number of kings and ruled for about 35years. He defeated eight kings of northern India called Aryavatra and led a campaign of conquest in South Indica (Dakshinpatha) and defeated twelve kings.
(2) What do you know about Chandragupta Vikramaditya?
Ans: Chandragupta (II) Vikramaditya was a famous king of Ujjain. He ruled from 380 A.D. to 412 A.D. and his biggest conquest was over the sakes. He issued a very large number of coins in gold, silver and copper. The gold coins tells us about his achievements and personality. He was a devote of visnu and adopted the title of ‘”Vikramaditya” that means son of valai.
(3) Write a note on Kalidasa.
Ans: Kalidasa was a Sanskrit poet who wrote several dreams and poems. His play “Sakuntala” and poem “Meghaduta” are very famous.
(4) What do you know about the economic life during the Gupta Period?
Ans: The people of Gupta period led a prosperous life with low amount of taxes and cheap daily products. The largest number of gold coins called Dinaras were issued during this period & the coins were a master piece of art and indicate about large number of internal and foreign trade. Agriculture was the main occupation of the people along with cattle breeding, manufacturing and production of goods. During Gupta period, people had a good cultural and business connection with Asian countries like – Thailand, Mayanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia etc.
(5) Why is Gupta period called the Golden Age of India?
Ans: During Gupta period, science & technology were very advanced. The invention of Decimal was in this period and the famous scientist Aryabhatta wrote his book “Aryabhattiya”, and many other books written on Mathematics, astronomy found its place in foreign countries. The famous “Qutab Minar” was constructed during this period. All these achievements show that Gupta period was very advanced in sphere of life and is considered as “Golden Age” of India.
