→(d) All the above
- (5) Very short answer type questions.
(i) Define sedimentation?
→Sedimentation is a process in which heavier particles of an insoluble solid settles down in liquid. The solid particles which settle down are called ‘sediments.’
(ii) What is evaporation?
→Evaporation is a process of ‘converting a liquid into its vapour form.’ The liquid component evaporates and solid component is left behind.
(iii) For what purpose combine machine is used for?
→A combine machine is used for both harvesting and threshing process.
Threshing is a process of separation of grains from stalks. i.e. wheat, rice etc.
(6) Short answer type questions.
(i) Give difference between evaporation and condensation?
→ Evaporation- is the process of converting a liquid into its vapour form.
Condensation- is the process of conversion of water vapours into its liquid form.
(ii) Give difference between saturated solution and unsaturated solution?
→ Saturated solution – The solution in which no more solute (salt, sugar. etc.)
Can be dissolved at a given temperature is called saturated solution.
Unsaturated solution – The solution in whichmore of solute can be dissolved
at the given temperature is called unsaturated solution.
(iii) Explain different types of threshing?
→Threshing can be done in three types of ways: –
(1) Manual threshing : It is done by beating the stalks with sticks on the ground or beating against any hard object.
(2) Threshing by animals : Some animals like bullocks are allowed to trample the Stalks.
(3) Threshing by machine : Threshers are generally used for this purpose, these days.Combine machine is also used for both harvesting and threshing.
(7) Long answer type questions.
(i) Explain the following methods of separation.
(a) Threshing: -Threshing can be done in three ways : (1) Manual threshing,
(2) Threshing by Animals, (3) Threshing by machine like, thresher, combine.
Threshing is a process of separation of grains from stalks. i.e. wheat, rice etc.
b) Winnowing: -Winnowing is an agriculture method for separating grains from Chaff. It is also used to remove hay and chaff or other pests from stored gains.
Taking a mixture of husk and wheat grains. You can also use powdered leaves instead of husk. Put the mixture in a plate or carboard. Take this mixture to an open ground. Hold the plate or cardboard at your shoulder height in the direction of wind. In case wind is not blowing. Winnowing fan is also used for this purpose.
(c) Steving: -Sieving is a method to separate larger substances from smaller
substances using a sieve. For exam. Take some flour in a sieve. Shake the sieve to-and-fro above the plate. The fine particles of flour pass through the fine holes of the sieve and get collected in the plate placed belowthe sieve. Bigger bran particles which could not pass through the holes remain in the sieve.
(ii) What is separation? Why do we need to separate different components of a mixture?
→ ‘Separation means process of moving something apart.’ Separate undesirable substances from grains.Taking out useful substances from a mixture is usually the main reason forseparation of substances. The need to separate components of mixture or animpure substance is due,
(1) To remove undesirable and harmful substances: -separating stones from rice, wheat, and pulses.Drinking water coming fromrivers, dam, and lakes but it contains impurities and germs and could make us sick. Thus, separation is necessaryto remove these impurities.
(2) To obtain desirable components: – some substances are more desirable than others in a mixture. Therefore, they need to be separated, for example, churning curd to obtain lassi and butter. Similarly, Petrol, diesel, kerosene, and paraffin wax must be separated from the Petroleum.
*ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: –
Write short answer questions: –
(1) What is the meaning of separation?
→Separation is defined as moving something apart from each other.
(2) Why should we clean the rice before cooking?
→Rice contains some stones, soil, particles, and mud, hence we should clean it before cooking.
(3) For which substances we can use hand picking process?
→For larger sized particles such as stones, pieces of dirt, and lighter impurities like husk, hand picking process is used.
(4) What is the meaning of threshing?
→The separation of grains from its stalk is called as threshing.
(5) Which animal can be help used to do threshing?
→Farmer used Bullocks for threshing.
(6) Explain the process of winnowing?
→ Winnowing is an agriculture method of separating grains from chaff.
(7) State the conclusion of winnowing?
→ The lighter particles like husk or dry leaves are blown away by the wind.
(8) State the advantage of sieving?
→ Sieving is very cheap and easy method of separation.
(9) What do you mean by decantation?
→ The process of pouring out the liquid from the top layer without disturbing the sediments below are called as the decantation.
(10) What is the definition of saturated solution?
→ The solution in which no more solute is dissolved at a given temperature is called as saturated solution.
(11) What do you mean by unsaturated solution?
→ The solution in which more of solute can be dissolve at a given temperature is called as unsaturated solution.
