(4) Choose the correct answer: –
(i) Which of the following is not matter.
(a) water
(b) sound
(c) air
(d) Fruits
→ (c) air
(ii) Which property is common to all mater?
- Matter takes up space and has no mass
- Matter takes up space and some mass
- Matter takes up space and has mass
- Matter takes up space and may or may not have mass
→ (b) Matter takes up space and some mass
(iii) Which of the following is transparent?
- Wood
- Glass
- Paper
- Plastic
→ (b) Glass
(5) Very short Question / Answer?
(i) What is an atom?
→ If we continue breaking this piece of any matter. It becomes smaller and smaller.
So, this smallest piece is called an atom. Atoms are extremely small.
(ii) Define density?
→The mass per unit volume of substance is known as density.
(iii) What are transparent objects?
→ If most of the light can pass through an object, it is known as transparent object.
i.e. glass, air, clear water etc.
(iv) What are opaque objects?
→If no light can pass through an object, it is called opaque object. Through such objects we cannot see things. i.e. wooden box, cup, coloured bottle, cardboard, metal container etc.
(v) What are translucent objects?
→If light can pass through an object partially, it is called translucent object.
We cannot see through such objects clearly. i.e. frosted glass used in windows.
(6) Short answer questions: –
(i) What is the difference between transparent and translucent objects? Give examples?
→If most of the light can pass through an object, it is known as transparent object.
If light can pass through an object partially, it is called translucent object.
Exam. Transparent object – Glass, clear water, air. Translucent object – frosted glass.
(ii) Select the objects from the following which shine. Glass bowl, plastic mug, steel chair, gold chain, silver ring?
→ Objects which are shine – Glass bowl, Steel chair, gold chain, silver ring.
(7) Long answer question.
(i) Are all liquids soluble in water?
→You will notice that some sub-stances have completely disappeared or dissolved in water. We say that these substances are soluble in water. Few substances do not disappear in water even after stirring for a long time. These substances are insoluble in water. Liquids which mix with each other are called miscible liquids.
Which do not mix with each other are called immiscible liquids.
For example : (1) If we mix lemon juice in water, it completely disappears because it is solublein water. (2) If we put few drops of mustard oil or coconut oil in water oil will float on the top of water because it is insoluble in water.
Thus, all liquids are not soluble in water.
(ii) List any four item that can float on water and five items that can not float on water?
→ List of items that can float on water : (1) Dried leaves fallen on the surface of a pond will float on it. (2) Piece of wood, (3) Any type of liquid oil, (4) Thermocol,
List of Items that cannot float on water : (1) Stone that you throw into this pond will sink and settle at bottom, (2) Iron nail, (3) Sand, (4) Chalk powder, (5) Sawdust.
Thus e, we observe some materials that do not mix with water, float on the surface of water. Others may have sunk to the bottom of the beaker.
*Extra Questions and Answers: –
- Write short answers of following questions: –
(1) Write some objects made from the material paper?
→Books, notebooks, calendar, newspaper etc.
(2) What is matter?
→Anything that has mass and occupies space is called matter.
(3) What are the properties of matter?
→ Appearance and luster are the properties of matter.
(4) What do you mean by texture?
→ Different materials feel different when you touch them is called as texture.
(5) What is the texture of wool and metal?
→ The wool is soft and rough while the metal is hard and smooth.
(6) What do you mean by soluble substance? Write two examples?
→Some substances have completely disappeared in water or dissolve completely in water are called as soluble substances.
Example : Sugar, Salt.
(7) What do you mean by insoluble substances? Write two examples?
→ Some substances do not dissolve completely in water are called as insoluble substances.
Example : Chalk powder, sand etc.
(8) What do you mean by miscible liquids?
→ Liquids which mix with each other are called as miscible liquids.
Example : Milk and water
(9) What are the immiscible liquids?
