(5) Very Short Answer Type Questions: –
(i) What is meant by dump?
→A large, low-lying area used to dispose garbage is known as dump.
(ii) What type of garbage is collected in blue dustbin and green dustbin?
→Non-biodegradable waste is collected in blue dustbin and biodegradable waste is collected in green dustbin.
(iii) What is meant by recycling?
→Recycling is the process of changing the waste and non-useable materials into useful material is called recycling.
(6) Short Answer Type Questions: –
(i) Distinguish between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste?
→ Which waste material can be decomposed by the action of micro-organisms into harmless substances is called biodegradable. And which waste material cannot be decomposed by the action of micro-organisms into harmless substances are called non-biodegradable waste.
(ii) What is vermicomposting? How is it done?
→With the help of earthworms preparing compost is called vermicomposting.
These redworms eat the waste material along with soil and convert it into compost. This method is simple, effective, and convenient.
(7) Long Answer Questions: –
(i) Explain how plastic is a boon?
→ Plastics is very useful part of our day-to-day life. Plastic is lightweight, flexible, low cost, and water resistant. The plastic containers have replaced the glass and paper containers, which wereused earlier. The plastic bags are reusable and can be recycled. Plastic tubes, bottles are used extensively in the laboratory equipment’s. Plastic is also cost-effective, corrosion resistant, we use plastic in our daily needs i.e. tiffin box, water bottle, toys, pens, toothbrush, chair, and table etc. Thus, plastic has some advantages and some disadvantages also.
(ii) List various methods of garbage disposal. Explain any one?
→In our daily life activity every person can produce some amount of garbage.
We need proper methods of garbage disposal for maintaining cleanliness in home and surrounding. i.e. segregation of garbage uses blue dustbin for non-biodegradablewaste and green dustbin for biodegradable waste. There are three important methods of disposal of garbage (1) Composting, (2) Landfill, and (3) Incineration etc.
(1) Composting : The process of decomposition of biodegradable waste into compost by the action of microorganisms is called composting. Compost is rich in nutrients, it provides all essential nutrients for growth of plant and agricultural crop also.
(iii) Explain the 4R’s?
→Wastage, Garbage, all biodegradable, and non-biodegradable materials disposal methods are very necessary for our environments.
We can follow 4R’s in our daily life i.e. (1) Reuse: In the word we find use material again. For example, we can use empty jars and bottles as like pen stand and house plantation, reuse as a flower pot etc. (2) Reduce: Reducing the amount of waste we produce is the best way to protect the environment. We can use metals or glass utensils instead of disposable glasses and plates. (3) Recycle: The process of changing the waste and non-useable materials into useful materials is called recycling. (4) Refuse: Refuse the plastic and polythene bags. By refusing we can avoid disposable plastic which pollute our environment.
