I.) COMPREHENSION AND ENJOYMENT
1.) Give the central idea of the poem.
Answer – The struggle a man has in life in the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is its main theme. It talks on the decisions one must make in life and their effects. We always regret the choices we make, but once they are made, they cannot be changed.
2.) Read the lines given below and answer the questions that follow:
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
(a) Name the poet.
Robert Frost.
(b) What does the poet see in front of him?
Answer – The poet can see two roads in front of him.
The poet likens it to picking between two possible directions in life. The poet “sees” two potential directions for his life, which correspond to the metaphor’s two options. He talks of a point in his life when he had to choose between two options (roads or paths).
(c) What is the poet sorry about?
Answer – The poet Robert Frost regrets that he could only move in one direction at once. He will therefore miss out on the adventures of the other road. Because it had only been used (stomped on) by a few individuals, the poet believed it would be more difficult to travel on. The poet observed that the second lane was utilised nearly as frequently as the first when in the other direction. He worried that after choosing the second road, he would come to regret it and would sighly tell everyone about it.
(d) What is the symbolic meaning of two different paths in the woods?
Answer – In the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, two distinct routes in the woods symbolise the decisions we make throughout our lives.
Making the best choice is crucial since we can never turn back and go back in time. There would be no turning back once one route led to another.
3.) Read the lines given below and answer the questions that follow.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.
(a) Which path did the poet choose to travel?
Answer – The poet made the decision to choose the less-trodden route.
The poet is expressing that he took a more difficult path in a figurative sense. To ensure he didn’t miss any of the events, the poet, on the other hand, made the decision to go back to the first trail on a different day. He was aware, though, that one path often leads to another, and he might never get to follow the first one.
(b) What does the poet mean by the word difference inthe last line?
Answer – In the final line, the poet uses the term “difference” to imply that choosing to follow the second road has had a significant impact on his life. The phrase also refers to accepting reality. He chose an unknown path in life. He chose the less-trodden path because he wanted to live a different life.
(c) Is the poet doubtful about his decision?
Answer – The poet does not believe that going the unconventional road was a mistake. The poet wanted to take both routes. Though he is aware that he won’t be able to keep his commitment to himself, he makes plans to investigate one before going back to examine the other. He was only disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to return to the initial road because, once we move forward in life, there is no turning back.
(d) Justify the title of the poem ‘The Road Not Taken’.
Answer – The poem’s title, “The Road Not Taken,” is appropriate because it captures the idea of the poem, which is that every person must make decisions at some point in their lives. The poem discusses the two distinct options that one must select from while making a significant decision. Before choosing a route, the person weighs all of the options. One stands out from the crowd when they make the decision to do things differently. Since the roads represent life’s difficulties, the title is symbolic.
