Comprehension Check
1.) In what way is the forest pool different from the one which Ranji knew in the Rajputana desert?
Answer: The forest water was clear, clean and inviting. He never saw such pool in Rajputana where there were sticky and muddy pools.
2.) The other boy asked Ranji to ‘explain’ himself.
(i) What did he expect Ranji to say?
Answer: The other had an arrogant attitude and expected Ranji to apologize for no valid reason.
(ii) Was he, in your opinion, right or wrong to ask this question?
Answer: The other boy expected Ranji to leave the pool, which was wrong. He was wrong to ask Ranji such question as the pool was not anybody’s property.
3.) Between Ranji and the other boy, who is trying to start a quarrel? Give a reason for your answer.
Answer: Initially Ranji was friendly toward the other boy, he even the boy to join him in the pool. But the other boy was arrogant and asked to leave the pool. He unnecessarily called him a villager and warrior himself. It was then the quarrel started which was initiated by the other boy.
4.) “Then we will have to continue the fight,” said the other.
(i) What made him say that?
Answer: After their fight, both of them got tired and the other boy thought that Ranji would go. But Ranji didn’t give up and told him that he would not leave the pool. Ranji was firm and the other boy decided to continue the fight next day.
(ii) Did the fight continue? If not, why not?
Answer: No, the fight didn’t continue the next day. Both went to the pool with an intention to continue last day’s fight, but when Suraj saw Ranji diving so well, he asked him to teach him diving and in exchange he promised Ranji to make him become wrestler like him. This made them become friends.

1.) What is it that Ranji finds difficult to explain at home?
Answer: After the fight, Ranji got home he was already tired and had cuts and bruises on his face, legs and arms. It became difficult for him to hide the fact that he had been in an ugly fight.
2.) Ranji sees his adversary in the bazaar.
(i) What does he wish to do?
Answer: When Ranji saw his adversary coming, he first thought to turn away and look somewhere so that he could he could avoid him. Then the second thought was to throw the lemonade bottle at his adversary.
(ii) What does he actually do, and why?
Answer: Ranjji’s both thoughts didn’t take form into actions, instead he stood on the ground and gave an angry look at his adversary.
3.) Ranji is not at all eager for a second fight. Why does he go back to the pool, then?
Answer: Last day’s fight made Ranji weak and lazy and also had soreness in his body,so firs the felt that he should not go for a second fight. But then again he thought that by not going to the pool would mean that he accepted his defeat and Ranji didn’t want to let this happen so he went back to the pool.
4.) Who was the better swimmer? How do you know it?
Answer: Ranji is a better swimmer.On the next day, the other boy asked Ranji to swim across and much to his amazement Ranji dived into the water with ease. The other boy was taken aback and wanted to learn his skill too. The diving scene of Ranji makes clear that he is an excellent swimmer.
5.) What surprises the warrior?
Answer: Once again Ranji showed his diving skill. He circled the warrior under the water and came up from behind him. The warrior was in total amazement and appreciated his skill.
6.) Now that they are at the pool, why don’t they continue the fight?
Answer: The two boys were at the pool for a fight for the second time. But destiny had some other plans, when Suraj came to know about Ranji’s diving skill he was impressed and asked him to teach him and in return he promised to make him a wrestler. This bloomed into new relation of friendship.
7.) Ranji’s superiority over the other boy is obvious in the following:

Answer: Good diving,swimming under water, making a good point, willingness to help.
8.) What, according to you, makes the two adversaries turn into good friends in a matter of minutes? Explain it as you have understood it.
Answer: Both the boys possessed certain talent and promised to help each other. Initially the boys were each others’ adversaries and at the second time of their meeting at the pool, upon seeing Ranji’s diving skill, Suraj was impressed and wanted to learn the same. On the other hand Suraj was a strong built boy and Ranji wanted to physique like him, and Suraj promised him have it. In this way, the boys decided to help each other and became friends and foes turned into friends.

1.) Is fighting the only way of resolving differences of opinion? What else can be done to reach a mutually acceptable settlement?
Answer: No, fighting is not the only way of resolving differences of opinion. Everyone has different opinion and one must learn to respect it first. Even if there is difference, one should try to listen and sort things out. Fighting would make situation worse and even end relations. One should try to understand the other’s thoughts and not react in the way that would make it worse.
2.) Have you ever been in a serious fight only to realize later that it was unnecessary and futile? Share your experience /views with other frankly and honestly.
Answer: No, I have never been involved in a serious fight. Generally I avoid such situations.
3.) Why do some of us find it necessary to prove that we are better than others? Will you be amused to annoyed to read the following sign at the back of the car in front of you?
I may be going slow but I am ahead of you.
Answer: There are some people who brag about themselves. They feel that they are better than the others and belittles everyone around them. This kind of mentality makes them arrogant.
I will be amused to read the given sentence at the back of the care in front of me.
