1.) Why had Framton Nuttel come to the “rural retreat”?

Answer: Mr. Framton Nuttel had problem of nervousness and as cure and to have peaceful life he went to countryside.

 

2.) Why had his sister given him letters of introduction to people living there?

Answer:  Framton’s sister thought that he would feel lonely as there were not more people in the countryside. This would make his condition more critical . To make him know about the people around him, his sister gave him letters of introduction.

 

3.) What had happened in the Sappleton family as narrated by the niece?

Answer:  The niece narrated a story that three years ago Mrs.Sappleton’s husband and her two young brothers went off for their day’s shooting and never came back. Mrs. Sappleton kept the window open because she thought they would return again.

1.) What did Mrs. Sappleton say about the open window?

Answer: When Mrs.Sappleton met Mr.Framton, she told him about the open window saying that she kept the window open because her husband and brothers had gone out and would come back through the open window.

 

2.) The horror on the girl’s face made Framton swing around in his seat. What did he see?

Answer: The girl was staring out through the window and had horror in her eyes which made Mr.Framton to turn. When he swung around in his seat, he saw three figures walking across the lawn towards the window.

1.) Why did Framton rush out wildly?

Answer:  Initially Vera told Mr. Framton about Mrs.Sappleton’s husband and brothers who went out three years ago and never came back. Then he saw three figures walking towards the window, this whole scenario made him nervous and thought that they were ghosts and he rush out wildly.

 

2.) What was girl’s explanation for his lighting exit?

Answer:  When Mr. Framton went out wildly, the girl said that he had fear of dogs and had a bitter experience regarding it. She said that he went because he saw a spaniel dog which made him go at the speed of the light.

1.) Is this a mystery story? Give a reason for your answer.

Answer: The Open Window is not a mystery story. But the imaginative story narrated by Vera gives adds the mystery to the story. Initially when Vera met Mr. Framoton, she narrates a story telling him that her aunt’s husband and two brothers went three years ago and never returned and poor aunt keeps the window open in hope that they would return someday. But after some time when Mr.Framton saw three images coming toward the window, he went thinking them as ghosts. These things add mysterious elements.

 

2.) You are familiar with the ‘irony’ of the situation in the story. (Remember The Cop  and The Anthem in Class VII(Supplementary Reader) Which situations in ‘The Open Window’ are good examples of use of irony?

Answer:  Irony is something that is supposed to have a specific result but has opposite result.In the story ‘The Open Window’ Mr. Framton goes to countryside to get cure for his  nervousness . But there Mrs.Sappelton’s niece narrates him a story which was not true and when he sees the three people coming towards the window, he becomes scared and goes away. He thinks of Mrs.Sappleton’s husband and brothers as ghosts and makes him more nervous let alone getting cured.

 

3.) Which phrases/sentences in the text do you find difficult to understand? Select a few and guess the meaning of each. Rewrite a simple paraphrase of each.

Answer:  Masculine habitation- Refers to place where male lived

“I say, Bertie, why do you bound?”- Bound refers to jumping.
