(1) How would Maya’s life be different in South Africa today?
Maya’s life would be different in South Africa today. She didn’t face any types of discrimination there. All the races people are allowed to vote. All the basic facilities are provided to all the citizens. They have the freedom to learn the language what they want to learn. There is no prohibition for the languages. There is no special treatment to the particular races’ people. All citizens are considered as equal.
(2) What are the various ways in which people participate in the process of government?
There are some various ways in which the people participate in the process of the government. Such as
(i) By taking the active participation in the election via voting.
(ii) By criticizing the government if it is not working in the right way.
(iii) By organising such a signature campaign against the government to show their disapproval by taking out the rallies, dharnas, strikes , etc.
(iv) By taking the active participation in the debate shows which is organized by the social media, TV , Press and so on.
(3) Why do you think we need the government to find solutions to many disputes or conflicts ?
Conflicts occurs when the people feel that they are being discriminated. It can become trouble some to handle the people from using the violent means to settle their differences. It can create the tension among others who is living in the area. This is why, it becomes the government’s responsibility to resolve the conflicts or the disputes as well.
(4) What actions does the government take to ensure that all people are treated equally ?
There are some various actions the government takes to ensure that all the people are treated equally , such as :
(i) Government ensures that the citizens of the country are considered to be equal on the basis of their caste , religion , gender , etc .
(ii) Government gives the reservation in the government jobs , school and colleges to those people who are unequal in the society .
(5) Read through the chapter and discuss some of the key ideas of a democratic government. Make a list. For example, all people are equal.
There are some various actions the government takes to ensure that all the people are treated equally , such as :
