Preposition
Prepositions are an element of speech. They illustrate the connection between a noun, a pronoun, and another element of the sentence.
The object of a proposition is a noun or pronoun.
The object of the proposition can also be a gerund, but not an infinitive.
Prepositions are often used before the thing they refer to. Prepositions can show location, movement, and time.
Prepositions can also function as conjunctions, adverbs, and adjectives.
Prepositions – AT, FOR, FROM, BESIDE, BESIDES, AMONG, BETWEEN, BY, IN, ON, OVER, ABOVE, UPON,DURING, WITHIN, AFTER, BEHIND,WITH etc.
At –
A) Refers to a certain point in time.
Examples-
I will meet you at 4 pm.
She went home at midnight.
Movie is interesting at the beginning.
Likewise, at dawn, at sunset, at the end, etc.
B) At is used before festivals
Examples-
We have a vacation at Christmas.
She came home at Diwali.
We are at a new year party.
C) The word “at” should be used to indicate a general location of someone or something.
Example- Sahil is at the college.
My uncle lives at Kandivali.
IN
A) Use “in” to emphasize that someone or something is inside the building or location.
Example- Sahil is in college.
I live in canada.
B) End of a certain period of time, In is used.
Example– In the winter, In June , In the year 2022, In the evening, In The morning
I graduated in the year 2018.
We will be visiting there in the evening.
There is snowfall in the winter season.
C) It is also utilized for showing the entire amount of time needed to perform an action or procedure.
Example-
This Bus will get you from Agra to Chandigarh in six hours.
The operation will complete in an hour.
D) IN is used to show state or point of reference.
Seema is firm in her decision.
ON-
A) Regardless of the date, the word “on” refers to a certain day.
It refers to day, date, year.
Example- I was born on thursday.
She visited the temple on 1st May 2023.
B) It also used to show the situation, place or condition.
Example-
He is on the verge of starvation.
C) ON indicates support and concern.
Example-
She has written a poem on Mindset.
D) When the workplace has no structure, framework or building, then ON is used as; on estate, on farm, on the platform, on the plantation, on the bus stop, on the railway etc.
Example-
Sahil works on the field.
His sister works on a farm.
He is waiting on the platform.
DURING –
a) When something happens or a condition continues for a while, the word while is used before that allotted or specified time.
Example-
People sleep during the night.
These fruits come during the summer.
We enjoyed it a lot during summer vacation.
BY-
a) By – refers to the final step at which something was or is to be finished.
Example- We will reach there by this evening.
I have to complete this assignment by 12 noon.
b)) By means throughout when used with day or night.
Example- He worked by day and slept by night.
FOR-
For is used before a time phrase to show that so much time has passed during which an action or a situation continued.
Example-
We waited for an hour but she didn’t come for the inauguration.
We have not seen her for 6 years.
Important points to note-
1.) If the noun giving time includes an adjective, the prepositions at, on, and in are not utilized.
Examples-
She visited the temple last Monday.
We will go there again next month.
We will go to the gym every morning.
I will be thirty next March.
2) Yesterday, today and tomorrow do not require a preposition.
Examples-
I will meet you again tomorrow.
She met me yesterday.
Sahil is arriving today.
3) Using AT, ON and IN in sentences.
Example- Shahin lives at the seaside.
Radha lives on an island.
However, seaside refers to being close to the sea, so the preposition at is used; island is thought of as being open, so the preposition on is used.
Most of the people live in cities,villages,suburbs,deserts,countries, and towns.
The preposition IN (i.e., inside) is used for Village, suburb, desert, country and town as all perceived as closed entities.
Example- Radha lives in a village.
FROM-
1.) For a point of time.
It is used in all tenses, ie past present, and future
Past tense
I was in Rishikesh from 11th March to 23 March.
Present Tense-
She takes tuitions from morning till evening.
Future tense-
I will do practice from tomorrow.
2.) From – also indicates Starting point
Example- Radha comes from Canada.
3.) From – also indicates Origin
Example- She has started her work from good thought and ideas.
4.) Form – also indicates Separation
Example – I do not know him from his sister.
5.) From- indicates Cause
Example- Infections are caused from viruses
She got infected from touching unhygienic things.
9) Using IN, INTO prepositions in sentences.
IN- Denotes rest within
Example- Sara is in her bedroom.
INTO- Denotes motion inwards
Example- She went into the forest.
10) Using ON, OVER, ABOVE, UPON prepositions in sentences.
ON – Denotes rest and denotes contact of the surface.
Example- Students sat on the floor. (rest)
UPON – shows movement
Example- A dog jumped upon a cat. (motion)
OVER – denotes higher position and also contact or directly above.
Example- He lives over the street. (on the other side of)
Water was flowing over the tank.
ABOVE – denotes higher position
Example- Sahil is above me in the office. (Superior to)
11) Using BETWEEN & AMONG prepositions in sentences.
BETWEEN – used for two person or things
Parents divided their property equally between their two sons.
AMONG – used with more than two.
Example-The bird’s house is nested among the trees.
The beautiful flower hidden among the leaves of the tree.
12) Using BESIDE & BESIDES prepositions in sentences.
BESIDE – Means by side
Example-
She kept a flower pot beside the chair. (near)
BESIDES- Means in addition to, in spite of
Example-
Besides notes she wants last year’s question papers. (In addition to)
Besides the pain in his hand, he wrote a paper and gave an exam.(In spite of)
13) Using ABOUT prepositions in sentences.
ABOUT – Used for concerning, doing, regarding,asking for information, around, to leave the house,on the opposite side, of time, indicating place, movement in various directions.
Example-
What is it about? (Regarding)
Give me more information about it. (Regarding)
What are you about? (Doing)
What do you know about this man? (Concerning)
What about you attending the event? (Asking for information)
Look about you? (Around)
She is traveling about the world (movement in various directions.)
The newspapers are lying about in the room. (Indicating place)
He is too weak to get about (To leave home)
ABOUT -We use the modal verb. The adjective be about to in the modal phrase be about to indicate a happening in the future.
Example- I was about to leave the field.
ABOUT – Used as an adverb – When discussing time, number, and quantity, we employ the word “about” as a preposition. It makes the time, number, or amount less precise or specific and more approximative.
Specific–
Example- Lunch is at one.
She moved to USA 2 years ago
Approximate –
Example-
Lunch is about one.
Shahin moved to the USA about 2 years ago.
