1.) Change the following into Indirect Speech
(i) She said to him, “You are the ugliest creature.”
Answer. She told him that he was the ugliest creature.
(ii) He said to her, “You are the loveliest girl.”
Answer. He told her that she was the loveliest girl.
(iii) I said to her, “I know you and your mother.”
Answer. I told her that I knew her and her mother.
(iv) The headmaster said to the boys, “I love you as my children.”
Answer. The headmaster told the boys that he loved them as his children.
(v) The little girl said to her mother, “I cannot live without you now.”
Answer. The little girl told her mother that she could not live without her then.
(vi) The boy said to his teacher, “I have been reading hard since yesterday.”
Answer. The boy told his teacher that he had been reading hard since the previous day.
(vii) The students said to their teacher, “We will do well in the examination this year.”
Answer. The students told their teacher that they would do well in the examination that year.
(viii) The girl said to her mother, “I will stand first in this examination as I am preparing well.”
Answer. The girl told her mother that she would stand first in that examination as she was preparing well.
(ix) He said to his friend, “We are going the day after tomorrow for a picnic.”
Answer. He told his friend that they were going the day after the next day for a picnic.
(x) She said to him, “I have known you for many years.”
Answer. She told him that she had known him for many years.
2.) Change the following:
(i) She said to the man, “Do you smoke?”
Answer. She asked the man if he smoked.
(ii) The boy said to his friend, “Will you sit in the examination tomorrow?”
Answer. The boy asked his friend if he would sit in the examination the next day.
(iii) The Minister said to the people, “Do you want development of the country?”
Answer. The minister asked the people if they wanted development of the country.
(iv) Everyone said, “Can you do some work to help the people?”
Answer. Everyone asked if I could do some work to help the people.
(v) The teacher said to his student, “Do you want to learn English?”
Answer. The teacher asked his students if he wanted to learn English.
(vi) He said to the girl, “What is your name?”
Answer. He asked the girl what her name was.
(vii) Biren said to the boy, “Who was your teacher who helped you?”
Answer. Biren asked the boy who his teacher had been who had helped him.
(viii) The man said to the boy, “Where do you find the beautiful deer?”
Answer. The man asked the boy where he found the beautiful deer.
(ix) She said to the people, “Why do you kill innocent people?”
Answer. She asked the people why they killed innocent people.
(x) The man shouted to the people, “When will the bus come?”
Answer. The man asked the people when the bus would come.
(xi) The commander said to his soldier, “Why don’t you go forward?”
Answer. The commander asked his soldier why he did not go forward.
(xii) The girl said to the people, “How can we save the country?”
Answer. The girl asked the people how they could save the country.
(xiii) The policeman said to the reporter, “Why don’t you give information?”
Answer. The policeman asked the reporter why he did not give him information.
(xiv) The man said to me, “When will you go there?”
Answer. The man asked me when I would go there.
(xv) The boy said to his father, “How shall we stop this?”
Answer. The boy asked his father how they would stop that.
3.) Change the following into Indirect Speech:
(i) “Be careful,” he said to the boys.
Answer. He advised the boys to be careful.
(ii) The teacher said to the students, “Face life with confidence.”
Answer. The teacher advised students to face life with confidence.
(iii) She said, “Hurry up. Do not waste time.”
Answer. She ordered to hurry up and not to waste time.
(iv) The General said to the soldiers, “Obey the rules in every field.”
Answer. The general ordered the soldiers to obey the rules in every field.
(v) The teacher said to the students, “Children, prepare for life when you are young.”
Answer. The teacher called and ordered the students to prepare for life when they were young.
(vi) The woman told her children, “My children, love your neighbours.”
Answer. The woman advised her children to love their neighbours.
(vii) She said to me, “My friend, let us help each other.”
Answer. She called me and suggested that we should help each other.
(viii) I said to the people, “Let us live together.”
Answer. I suggested the people that we should live together.
(ix) He said, “Let me go my way.”
Answer. He said that he might be allowed to go his way.
(x) Tombi said to her friends, “Let us go to the market.”
Answer. Tombi suggested her friends that they should go to the market.
(xi) The girl said to her mother, “Let me read now before I sleep.”
Answer. The girl requested her mother that she might be allowed to read then before she slept.
(xii) “Mama, let me study medicine,” said the girl to her mother.
Answer. The girl requested her mother that she might be allowed to study medicine.
(xiii) Promilla said to her brother, “Let us make our parents happy.”
Answer.Promilla suggested her brother that they should make their parents happy.
(xiv) Usha said to her daughter, “Let other people say what they like.”
Answer. Usha told her daughter that other people might say what they liked.
(xv) Bimola said to her son, “My dear son, let us make a new world.”
Answer. Bimola called her son affectionately and suggested that they should make a new world.
4.) Change the following into Indirect Speech.
(i) The little boy said, “Alas! I have lost my pencil”
Answer. The little boy explained in despair that he had lost his pencil.
(ii) The teacher said, “May God bless you”
Answer. The teacher prayed that god might bless them.
iii) She said, “How clever I am!”
Answer. She exclaimed in wonder that she was very clever.
- iv) They said, “What a wonderful gift of Nature Loktak is!”
Answer. They exclaimed in surprise that Loktak was a very wonderful gift of nature.
- v) Binokumari said to her friends, “How beautiful I am!”
Answer. Binokumari exclaimed her friends in wonder that she was very beautiful.
- vi) The beggar took the alms and said “May the Almighty bless thee!”
Answer. The beggar took the alms and wished that the almighty might bless thee.
vii) Shantilata said, “What luck!”
Answer. Shantilata exclaimed in despair that luck was not good.
(viii)Romen said, “How strong I am!”
Answer. Romen exclaimed in wonder that he was very strong.
(ix) The fisherman said to the people, “Bravo! I have caught a big fish.”
Answer. The fisherman exclaimed to the people in delight that he has caught a big fish.

Answer. Kamei exclaimed to his friends in wonder that the oranges were very wonderful.
(xi) Bihari said, “How careful you are!”
Answer. Bihari exclaimed that he was very careful.
(xii) The young man said, “Hurrah! I have won the prize.”
Answer. The young man exclaimed in delight that he had won the prize.
(xiii) The good man said, “How unfortunate we all appear to be!”
Answer. The good man exclaimed in wonder that we all appeared to be very unfortunate.
(xiv) The driver declared, “How terrible the route is!”

(xv) Bimol said to the people, “Farewell, my friends!”
Answer. Bimol bade farewell to his friends.
(xvi) Premchand said to the people, “What a piece of work the painting is!”

(xvii)Sharma said to his friends, “Friends, how strange life is!”
Answer. Sharma addressed his friends exclaimed in wonder that life was very strange.
(xviii) Khan said, “How great my ancestors are!”
Answer. Khan exclaimed in wonder that his ancestors were very great.
(xix) Janab said,” Bravo! My son passes MBA!”

5.) Change the following into Indirect Speech.
(i) “My dear friend, we are in a mess,” said the boy to this friend.
Answer. The boy addressed his friend dearly and told that they were in a mess.
(ii) The little swallow went upto the Happy Prince and said, “Winter is approaching and I have to go to Egypt.”
Answer. The little swallow went up to the happy prince and said that winter was approaching and he had to go to Egypt.
(iii) The Happy Prince said calmly, “One more help and you may leave me alone here.”
Answer. The happy prince said calmly that one more help and he might leave him alone there.
(iv) The poet said, “Act in the living present.”
Answer. The poet ordered to act in the living present.
(v) The hare proudly said, “You poor thing! How slowly you crawl!”
Answer. The hare addressed him as poor thing and exclaimed that he crawled very slowly.
(vi) The boy said to his teacher, “Pardon me, sir, the bus is late and I am late today.”
Answer. The boy addressed his teacher respectfully and asked to pardon him, the bus was late and he was late that day.
(vii) Gourachand said to the young man, “How can you marry my daughter when you are so poor?”
Answer. Gourchand asked the young man how he could marry his daughter when he was so poor.
(viii) The beautiful girl said smilingly, “How ugly you are!”
Answer. The beautiful girl exclaimed smilingly that he was very ugly.
(ix) The young man said in despair, “Alas! how foolish I am!”
Answer. The young man exclaimed in despair that he was very foolish.
(x) The small children in clean dresses ran into the house and said, “Give us Yaoshang donation.”
Answer. The small children in clean dresses ran into the house and said to give them Yaoshang donation.
(xi) She said to me, “Good bye now.”
Answer. She forbade me good bye then.
(xii) “Who are you?” said the swallow.
Answer. The swallow asked who he was.
(xiii) Columbus said, “Put up your best, move to west.”
Answer. Columbus ordered to put up his best and move to west.
(xiv) “Alas! I have no ruby now”, said the Happy Prince, “Pluck out my eyes of sapphire for the poor.
Answer. The happy prince exclaimed in grief that he had no ruby then and he further ordered to pluck out his eyes of sapphire for the poor,
(xvi) “How pretty you are!” said the man to the girl.
Answer. The man told the girl with exclamation in wonder that she was very pretty.
(xvii) Hamlet said, “One may smile and smile and be a villain.”
Answer. Hamlet said that one might smile and smile and been a villain.
(xviii) Binodini said to Mani, “How strange life is!”
Answer. Binodini exclaimed to Manu that life was very strange.
(xix) The teacher said to Mani , “Why don’t you rest for some time?”
Answer. The teacher asked Mani why she did not rest for some time.
(xx) Biren said, “Congratulations!”
Answer. biren greeted congratulations.
(xxi) The teacher said, “Best of luck.”
Answer. the teacher wished best of luck for students.
