3.) Point out the difference of meaning in the following pairs of sentences:
i) We found the road easy. We found the road easily.
Answer. The first sentence denotes that the road is easy. But the second sentence means they found the road in easy way.
ii) Only Chaoba helped me in difficulty.Chaoba only helped me in difficulty.
Answer. The first sentence says only Chaoba was the person who helped. In the next sentence, it says Chaoba only helped and nothing else.
iii) He is too late for the class. He too is late for the class.
Answer. The first sentence says he is very late for class. But the second sentence says he is also late for class.
iv) He worked hard for the examination. He hardly worked for the examination.
Answer. First sentence says he studied hard for examination. Second sentence says he studied very less for examination as hardly used in negative way.
v). I came home directly. I directly came home.
Answer. First sentence says I came home by direct route. Second sentence says I came home instantly from some place.
4.) Correct the following sentences:
i) He came home before two months.
Answer. He came home two months ago.
Ago is the right adverb to be used after definite time.
ii) Though Sheela works very hardly, she fails in the examination.
Answer. Though Sheela works very hard, she fails in the examination.
Hardly is negative adverb, so adjective hard is used to make is positive.
iii) Peter comes to see me seldom.
Answer. Peter often comes to see me.
Seldom is negative word which means rarely. So, often is used in place of it.
iv) It is too hot in this room.
Answer. It is very hot in this room.
Very is the right adverb with adjective hot.
v) She felt much sorry for the delay.
Answer. She felt very sorry for the delay.
Very sorry is the correct form of adverb and adjective.
vi) Put off the lamps by and by.
Answer. Put out the lamps by and by.
Put out is the correct form of phrasal verb.
vii) I did not know to drive a car.
