Force and Types of Force |
1.) Choose the term to fill in the blanks.
a.) Force has to be applied to change the direction of a moving object. (moving, direction, force )
b.) When an elephant drags a wooden log over the land, the forces that are applied on the log are muscular force, gravitational force and frictional force .
(muscular force , mechanical force, gravitational force, frictional force)
c.) A ball was set rolling on a large table. If it’s motion is to be changed, a force will have to be applied on it.
(force, motion, gravitation )
d.) The force of friction always acts against the motion. (along, against)
2.) Match the following :
Group ‘A’ Group ‘B’
i.) An ox pulling a cart a. Magnetic force
ii.) Lifting a heavy iron object with a crane b. Electrostatic force
iii. Weighing with a spring balance c. Muscular force
iv) Applying brakes to a bicycle d. Gravitational force
v) Picking up pieces of paper with a plastic scale e. Frictional force
Answer
Group ‘A’ Group ‘B’
i.) An ox pulling a cart Muscular force
ii.) Lifting a heavy iron object with a crane Magnetic force
iii.) Weighing with a spring balance Gravitational force
iv.) Applying brakes to a bicycle Frictional force
v.) Picking up pieces of paper with a plastic scale Electrostatic force
3.) One or more forces are acting in the following examples . Name them.
a.) An object falling from a tall building – Gravitational force.
b.) An aeroplane flying in the sky –Mechanical force and gravitational force .
c.) Squeezing sugarcane juice with a squeezer – Muscular force.
d.) Winnowing foodgrain – Muscular force and gravitational force.
4.) Explain in your own words giving one example each.
Muscular force – Muscular force may be defined as the ability of using force with the aid of our bones and muscles in the body.
As for example, when we are lifting a weight, we are applying muscular force.
Gravitational force – gravitational force may be defined as the force that is exerted by the Earth for the purpose of attracting objects towards itself.
As for example, due to the gravitational force, a ball that is thrown upward in the air comes down again.
Mechanical force – mechanical force may be defined as the means of using force with the help of a machine.
As for example, a mechanical force is created by the airplane’s engines when it makes use of a propulsion system.
Electrostatic force – Due to friction, static electricity is generated on several objects such as rubber ,plastic and ebonite . Therefore, electrostatic force may be defined as the force that is applied by such electrically charged objects.
As for example, when one balloon that is rubbed with hair get’s attracted to another balloon then it is termed as electrostatic force.
The force of friction – the force of friction may be defined as the force that functions in an opposite manner in accordance with the direction of motion of a body.
As for example, in order to drive a vehicle, a force is generated by the engine on the driving wheels and this force enables the vehicle to move in a forward direction.
Magnetic force – magnetic force may be defined as the force that is applied by a magnet.
As for example , in particle accelerators, magnetic forces are used.
5.) Why?
a.) Machines are oiled from time to time.
Machines are oiled from time to time for the purpose of decreasing the friction that occurs between the parts of the machine. Thereby, it enhances the longevity of the machine and enables it to operate in an effective manner.
b.) An object thrown upwards comes down after reaching a point.
When an object is thrown in an upward direction, then its velocity tends to reduce. So ,as a result of which, it’s velocity becomes extremely low after it reaches a certain height and simultaneously the object starts to sink. There is exertion of gravitational force on every objects. It is due to the Earth’s gravitational force, an object which is thrown in the upward direction comes down after it reaches a certain height.
c.) Powder is sprinkled on a carrom board.
Powder is sprinkled on a carrom board for the purpose of decreasing the friction that takes place between the carrom coins or striker and the carrom board. By sprinkling the powder on a carrom board, it softens the board’s surface , so as a result of which there is a smooth movement of the striker and the coins on a carrom board.
d.) The ramp at a railway station has a rough surface.
The ramp at a railway station has a rough surface because the friction that occurs between our feet and the ground surface is sufficient for us to work in a comfortable manner without the risk of stumbling. But if it had a smooth surface, then our tendency of stumbling becomes quite higher due to the less frictional force that occurs between the ram and the feet.
6.) In what way are we different?
a.) Muscular force and mechanical force.
Difference between muscular force and mechanical force.
Muscular force
Muscular force may be defined as the capability of using force with the aid of our muscles in the body.
As for instance, when we are carrying a bag on our shoulders, then we are applying muscular force. This clearly indicates that any action that is performed by applying the force of our muscles then it is termed as muscular force.
Mechanical force
Mechanical force may be defined as the force that is produced by the help of a machine.
As for example, when heavy loads are lifted by a crane, then it is applying mechanical force. This clearly signifies, that force is produced by the crane in order to lift the heavy weight.
b.) The force of friction and gravitational force.
Difference between the force of friction and gravitational force.
The force of friction
The force of friction may be defined as the force that is necessary to retain relative motion in opposition to the friction.
As for example, brakes are applied in order to stop a running car. This is one of the relevant example of force of friction.
Gravitational force
Gravitational force may be defined as the force with the help of which the planet Earth attracts objects in the direction of itself.
As for example, it is due to the gravitational force, any object that we drop tends to fall to the ground.
7.) Write answers to the following questions in your own words.
a.) What are the things that can be done by applying force?
Various things that can be done by applying force are as follows:
- The path of a moving body can be changed by applying force.
- We can ride a bicycle by exerting force.
- We require force in order to bend any objects.
- A force is exerted for the purpose of pushing or pulling any objects.
These points clearly indicates, that force is essential for carrying out our day- to- day activities.
b.) What is meant by weight?
Weight may be defined as the force that is applied on an object because of the gravitational attraction of the planet Earth. In order to lift a greater weight, a greater force must be exerted.
c.) Which machines run on muscular force?
Manual stitching machine, bicycle, drilling machine and bullock cart are the following machines that operates on a muscular force.
