(A) Answer the following questions: – (marks – 1)
(1) _______ is the sole sources of energy for the earth.
Ans: – The sun
(2) What is insolation?
Ans: – The sun is the sole sources of energy for earth. Energy from the sun reaches the earth in the form of rays. This is called insolation.
(3) The atmosphere temperature decreases gradually with the increase in ______
Ans: – altitude
(4) Atmospheres temperature is measured using the instrument called _______
Ans: – thermometer
(5) What is air current?
Ans: – Due to insolation, the atmospheric air expands, become less dense and rises up this air movement is called air current.
(6) What is wind?
Ans: – Wind is the movement of the air. Air moves form high pressure to low pressure regions. Such air movement is called wind.
(7) What is Anemometer?
Ans: – Anemometer is the instrument used for measuring the wind speed.
(8) _______ is used to find the direction of wind.
Ans: – Wind vane
(9) What is humanity?
Ans: – The moisture content in the atmosphere is called humidity.
(10) ______is the instrument used to measure humidity.
Ans: – Hygrometer
(11) What is condensation?
Ans: – The process by which water vapour cools down to liquid state is called condensation.
(12) What is aerosols?
Ans: – The water vapour condenses around the fine dust particles in the atmosphere are called aerosols.
(13) What is fog?
Ans: – Fine water droplets remaining suspended like smoke over the valleys and water bodies. Their form at condensation is called fog.
(14) What is dew?
Ans: – In cool mornings, condensed water droplets can be found on gross blades and other cold surfaces. This is called dew.
(15) What is precipitation?
Ans; – Precipitation means any kind of water material like rain, snow etc. that are produced or formed in the atmosphere move down under the influences of gravity.
(16) ______ is the instrument used to measure rainfall.
Ans: – Rain Gauge
(17) What is weather?
Ans: – The atmospheric condition experienced in a particular place at a particular time is called weather.
(18) What is climate?
Ans: – The average weather condition at any region over a larger period of time is called climate.
Answer the following questions: – (marks – 2)
(1) What is the maximum and minimum temperature of a day?
Ans: – Meteorologists consider the atmospheric heat experienced just before the sunrise as the minimum temperature of the day. Heat experienced at 2 pm is considered as the maximum temperature.
(2) How does the earth’s surface maintain the atmosphere?
Ans: – The sun is the sole energy for the earth energy from the sun reaches the earth in the form of rays. This is called insolation. The surface of the earth gets heated due to insolation during the day time. Heat is transmitted to the atmosphere from the heated surface of the earth through different process. The surface of the earth gets cooled by this process. The clouds and gases like CO2 in the lower atmosphere absorb the heat radiating from the earth. Thus the heat required for the survived of life is maintained in the lower atmosphere.
(3) What is the use of solar energy?
Ans: – Earth receives continuous flow of solar energy. The utility potential of this non conventional source of energy is great in a tropical country like India. As the technology for converting solar energy to electrical energy using solar panels become widespread, it will be a relief for our energy crises.
(4) What is thermometer?
Ans: – Atmosphere temperature is measured using the instrument called thermometer. It records temperature in degree Celsius (oc) or degree Fahrenheit (OF)
(5) What is Barometer?
Ans:- Barometer is the instrument used for measuring atmospheric pressure, which is recorded in the units hectopascal (hpa) or millibar (mb).
(6) What is the function/importance of windmills?
Ans: – Electricity can be generated by installing windmills in neighbour having strong and continuous winds. Making use of this non conventional source of energy we can overcome increasing energy crisis. Wind energy is being generated in places like Ramakkalmedu, Palakkad district, using this technology.
(7) What are the forms of precipitation?
Ans: – The forms of prescription are –
(I) Rainfall – Precipitation in the form at water droplets.
(ii) Snowfall – Precipitation in form at tiny crystals of ice.
(iii) Hail stone – Precipitation in the form at ice pellets.
