Answer the following questions :
1.) Why had the students been marching? How was it an unusual march?
Answer: The students were marching to serve a notice to the collector,as representative of His Majesty’s government, asking the British to quit India or face the consequences. It was unusual because the students, who were marching, marched in complete silence. There were no slogans, no shouts, just the shuffle of feet, the drip of rain and a low murmur from the watching crowd.
2.) A police officer was seen talking to the student leaders. Can you guess what the officer had been talking to them?
Answer: The police officer might have asked the students to stop marching.
3.) Babu and Manju were a bit disappointed with the way students were marching. What was the reason?
Answer: Babu and Manju had expected the marching full of energy and slogans.They expected it to be violent but none of it happened as they expected. The march was carried out silently which is why both Babu and Manju were a bit disappointed.
4.) What had the police expected about the way of protest? How did the student leaders manage the protest?
Answer: The police had thought that the march would be violent and end up creating a lot of mess. It was expected that there would be loud agitation and slogans but none of it happened.
5.) What was there in the ‘mysterious parcel’? What suspicion did the police have about that?
Answer: The mysterious parcel had a cyclostyling machine. The police got to know about it and also knew that a number of copies of Mahatama Gandhiji’s speech were to be distributed. They suspected that there were other people who had taken shelter there.
6.) Why had Patil, the sub-inspector, come there? Who believed him? What was the result?
Answer: Mr. Patil, the sub-inspector was friend of Mohan’s father. He had gone there to help them and get them out of trouble. He wanted to take the cyclostyling machine as he knew that the police might come anytime and raid their house. He asked Mohan to handover the machine so that they would be safe from getting arrested.
7.) What do you think is the writer of the incident trying to impress upon the readers?
Answer: The writer wants to instill the feeling of patriotism in the readers. He highlights the fact that how everyone took active part in the freedom struggle. No matter what age, religion, nothing came in between people’s love for the country. It also shows how freedom fighters like Mahatama Gandhi devoted their lives in the freedom struggle and how people even children were impressed.
