THINKING ABOUT THE POEM
1.) Answer these questions:
- The poet says, “Beauty is heard in …”
Can you hear beauty? Add a sound that you think is beautiful to the sounds
the poet thinks are beautiful.
The poet, John Keats, says:
Heard melodies are sweet,
But those unheard are sweeter.
What do you think this means? Have you ever ‘heard’ a song in your head
long after the song was sung or played?
Answer: Yes, I have experienced beauty in the form of music and voice. Beautiful sounds made by birds, the sound of the flute, and other musical instruments give a beautiful experience to our senses. When we hear such beautiful sounds, it elevates us and makes us happy.
In the above lines, the poet John Keats says that the sounds that we hear are sweet because we know and experience it. But the unheard sounds are sweeter because it is in our imagination and we create it as we imagine.
2.) Read the first and second stanzas of the poem again. Note the following phrases: corn growing, people working or dancing, wind sighing, rain falling, a singer chanting These could be written as
- corn that is growing
- people who are working or dancing
Can you rewrite other phrases like this? Why do you think the poet uses
Answer: Wind sighing – The wind that is sighing
Rain falling – The rain that is falling
A singer chanting – A singer who is singing or chanting
Good deeds – Deeds that are good
Happy thoughts – Thoughts that are happy
3.) Find pictures of beautiful things you have seen or heard of.
Answer: I have seen many beautiful things in my life. A portrait of beautiful lady, garden full of flowers, waterfalls, mountain, valleys, etc. are some of the most beautiful things that I have seen.
4.) Write a paragraph on beauty. Use your own ideas along with the ideas in the poem. (You may discuss your ideas with your partner.)
Answer: Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. There is beauty in everything that we see and hear. If we see carefully, there is beauty in everything around us. It is important for us to see beauty in everything we see and hear. There is beauty in being kind and doing good deeds. When we do good deeds, there is creation of beauty. When we speak well about others, there is beauty.
