What is SIP?
SIP stands for Session initiation Protocol. It is used to create, maintain and terminate a session. With the help of Internet, we can do voice calling, video calling and send text messages. This protocol works with VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and other protocols. It is an application layer protocol which is used to control multimedia sessions along with other protocols over the internet.
When was SIP protocol designed?
SIP was designed in the year 1996 by Mark Handley, Henning Schulzrinne, Eve Schooler and Jonathan Rosenberg. And in the year 1999 this protocol was defined in RFC2543. This protocol was standardized by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force).
What are the types of SIP Entities?
SIP have two types of entities which is known as User Agents.
- Clients – These are the entities that take requests.
- Servers – These are the entities that accept requests.
There are Four Types of Servers:
- Redirect Server
- Proxy Server
- Registrar Server
- Location Server
What are the request messages in SIP?
SIP Request messages contain-
- INVITE – Request a Session
- ACK – Final response to the Invite
- OPTIONS – Ask for server capabilities
- CANCEL – Cancels a pending request
- BYE – Terminates a session
- REGISTER – Sends user’s address to server
- NOTIFY – To send event notice
