- Full form of IMAP is Internet Message Access Protocol.
IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is a mail protocol which is used by a local client to access mail through remote mail server. To retrieve emails from mail server to a local computer IMAP and POP3 (Post office Protocol) are widely used. It supports most of the Advance email clients and web servers. It also allows you to read all the folders that are on the mail server. It provides the user to create, delete, rename emails that are on the mail server. And it can be accessed from different devices.
How does IMAP work?
When u send an email to someone then the email goes from clients email to smtp (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server. And then the same mail server transfers this to the receiver’s mail server. And then with the help of IMAP mail server is received to the receiver.
What is the difference between IAMP and POP3?
IMAP protocol is a two-way incoming mail protocol which only downloads the email header instead of downloading mails. It downloads the emails from the server but leaves a copy of the email at the mail server. So even after downloading the mail we can read it from the server.
POP3 protocol downloads all the mails onto your local computer from the email server. And then delete the mails form the email server.
