Full form of CPWD: The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) of India is a central government agency responsible for construction, maintenance and repairs of various buildings and infrastructure owned by the Indian government. Some of the notable buildings and infrastructure managed by CPWD include the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, Supreme Court of India, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC) and many more. CPWD also provides engineering consultancy services to various government agencies and private sector organizations. The CPWD has been playing a pivotal role in the development of public infrastructure in India for over 150 years. Some of its notable achievements include the construction of iconic buildings such as the Rashtrapati Bhavan (the official residence of the President of India), Parliament House and Connaught Place; as well as major highways such as the Golden Quadrilateral project. CPWD was established in 1854 as a part of the Public Works Department (PWD). In 1947, after independence, CPWD was transferred to the Ministry of Works and Housing. In 1950, it was again transferred to the Ministry of Works, Communications and Power. In 1955, it was renamed as Central Public Works Department. CPWD is currently under the administrative control of the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
The head office of CPWD is located in New Delhi. It has regional offices in all state capitals and union territories. CPWD works through its field offices located in various cities across India. The department is headed by a Director General who is an officer belonging to Indian Engineering Service (IES).
CPWD has four main divisions namely:

3) Estates
4) Finance & Accounts
The CPWD’s mandate includes the construction of government buildings, roads, bridges, dams, canals, and other infrastructure projects. The department also provides architectural and engineering services for all public works projects. In addition, the CPWD is responsible for the maintenance of all government buildings and properties.
The CPWD employs a large workforce of engineers, architects, surveyors, planners, and other support staff. The department has its own training institute – the Central Public Works Department Training Academy – which imparts training to its employees on various aspects of public works construction and maintenance.
