Full form of CBSCE : The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is an autonomous body established under the Constitution of India, to formulate and administer the curriculum for all schools affiliated to it. It also provides guidance in teacher education, organizes teacher training and examinations, prepares textbooks for students and publishes school textbooks.It is an autonomous body under Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. CBSE has its headquarters at Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.
The CBSE was formed on 29 November 1916 in Calcutta by a group of English-speaking Indians who wanted to promote English as a medium of instruction in Indian schools. It was established as a result of pressure from non-resident Indians (NRIs) who had sent their children to British schools. The first meeting of the newly formed Board took place on 21 January 1917 where it was decided that the word ‘Indian’ should be replaced with ‘national’ wherever it appeared in school textbooks. In 1919, the first Indian general secretary of the board was appointed. The Central Board of Secondary Education has jurisdiction over all secondary schools in India and its primary function is to develop and maintain uniform standards for education throughout India.
The Central Board of Secondary Education is one of the three major boards in India to conduct examinations for secondary school and higher secondary school (Class X to XII), along with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Boards. It has also been accredited with A Grade by NAAC. The CBSE was formed as a result of an amendment to the Indian Institutes of Management Act 1947.
The Board’s objectives are to provide education to all children up to the age of 14 years and to promote high standards of education and culture generally. The Board has two major responsibilities:
- To implement programmes relating to secondary education;
- To formulate policy for secondary education and make regulations in this regard
The CBSE offers three types of educational courses:
- Class X
- Class XII (higher secondary)
Class X-XII (equivalent to Class IX-XII)
