- Full form of BGP is Border Gateway Protocol.
BGP stands for Border Gateway Protocol. It is an exterior routing protocol. It is a protocol with the help of which autonomous system are connected whether they are from different organizations or companies. The ISPs (internet service providers) that provide internet service on either national level or regional level use BGP protocol. That’s why it is also called Routing Protocol of Internet. India’s popular ISPs like Bharti Airtel, MTNL, BSNL, Tikona Broadband and other ISPs use Border Gateway Protocol.
Why BGP is Used?
When big organizations use two or more than two internet connections from service providers which is known as Multi Homing than BGP is used. In an organization when the public users access the web server or web sites with the internet, same way the users within the organizations which are known as telecommuters, these telecommuters also access the web server using the internet and their connectivity with the web server is important. In that case the organizations can take two or more internet connections and maybe from different ISPs.
History of BGP
First it was introduced as EGP (Exterior Gateway Protocol) and later it was replaced by BGP and since the year 1994 BGPv4 is being used. All the older versions are not in use. BGPv4 supports CIDR (Classless Inter Domain Routing) method.
