Functions of APMC
The APMC Act was enacted in 1963 to provide for the regulation of the trading of agricultural produce in market yards and to promote the orderly marketing of agricultural produce. The Act provides for the establishment of Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) in each district of the state.
The functions of the APMC include:
– regulating the trade of agricultural produce in the market yard
– providing storage facilities for agricultural produce
– transporting agricultural produce to and from the market yard
– grading and standardisation of agricultural produce
– providing credit facilities to farmers
– promoting cooperative marketing of agricultural produce
The APMC Act has been amended several times since its inception, most recently in 2017. The 2017 amendment has liberalised the APMC Act and has allowed private players to set up their own market yards and trade agricultural produce.
