What is First Conditional | Rules and Examples
When we want to talk about an action or event which has the possibility to occur in near future then we use first conditional sentence. As zero conditional refers only present facts, first conditional is used to mention any action for present or near future both. i) When if clause comes first in a sentence then a comma will be placed before starting the main clause. Comma is used to separate two clauses where two actions are interlined two each other.
Ex.
If I win the lottery, I will buy a car.
If I reach late, I will miss the last bus.
ii) In the reverse structure, main clause comes before the if clause where is no need to place any comma in between them.if plays the role of a conjunction in this place.
Ex.
I will pass the exam if I work hard.
I will be healthier if I eat good food.
iii) We need to sue two different parts for each clause like main clause and if clause in first conditional.
Ex.
If it rains today, I will stay inside home.
You will be smarter if you follow gadgets.
iv) First conditional is used in case of expressing something which has the possibility to occur in present or future.
Ex.
If I get the leave, I will wake up late.
If I get the book, I will read it today.
v) Sometimes in main clause we can use may or might in place of will when there is no certainty about the action being taken place.
Ex.
If you need someone’s help, I may help you.
If it is sunny day, we might plan for a picnic tomorrow.
vi) In some cases we also use be going to in main clause instead of will for emphasizing on a result which is certain to happen.
Ex.
If you are lonely, I am going to be with you.
I am going to be busy in the weekend if you do not come.
