Father’s Help Summary
Father’s Help Summary:
‘Father’s Help is a story written by R.K. Narayan. This story is taken from ‘Malgudi Days’. The story covers around a naughty boy who did not want to go to school on Monday morning.
The story begins with Swaminathan realizing to go to school. Swami decided not to go to school. He told his mother that he had severe headache and he cannot go to school. Swami’s mother was very innocent and she generously allowed swami to stay at home. Around 9:3 when his father came he saw swami at home and asked him the reason to miss his school. Swami told his father about his headache. Swami’s father at once realized it to be an excuse. He was very strict and he ordered swami to get dressed and go to school. He also told swami not to move around on Sundays. Swami realised that headache excuse would not help anymore so he changed his tactics. He told his father that his teacher would get very angry if he went late to school. His father enquired the name of the teacher. Swami said the teacher’s name is Samuel and this teacher would always scream and shout at students. He especially gets very angry with boys who arrived late. After hearing all this swami’s father forced swami to go to school with a letter addressed to the head master about the behaviour of Samuel. By the time Swami got ready his father had finished writing a long letter to the headmaster about the teacher. He gave the letter to swami and told him to give the letter to his headmaster as soon as he reached school. Swami was feeling bad, he felt like a liar. On the way to school he thought a lot and he was confused whether he had described his teacher correctly or not. He felt that he had mixed real with imagination and Samuel did not deserve such allegations. He wasn’t that bad. In fact he was better than others. Swami reached the school. He decided not to give the letter at that moment. He thought he would provoke Samuel and make him angry and then at the end of the day he would give the letter to the headmaster with enough evidence swami reached half an hour late but to his surprise, Samuel did not get angry infact upon hearing about swami’s headache, the teacher showed sympathy towards swami. He did not even punish swami for not doing his homework. Swami was sad and he thought he had not met anyone as good as Samuel. As the bell rang at 4:30, swami ran toward headmaster’s room to give him the letter. The room was locked peon informed swami that headmaster was on a leave for a week. He felt relieved. He returned home with the letter. On answering to why he did not give the letter to the headmaster, swami’s father took the letter and torn it and muttered that he deserved the punishment of Samuel.
