The city where I live in Essay: The city where I reside in is Kolkata, which is one of the most elegant and unique cities in West Bengal. It is popularly known as the city of joy. Before the advent of English, three local villages, Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikata were part of erstwhile Calcutta. All these places were chosen by the Indian merchant to settle for the purpose of trade and commerce who migrated all the way from Satgaon. The history of Kolkata as a part of the British settlement dates back to the formation of the trading post by Job Charnock, an agent of the British Esat India company. Kolkata is located on the eastern banks of the Hoogly river. This city is approximately positioned 80 kilometres west of Bangladesh. It is the most populous city in India having a population of about 14.9 million as of 2021.

Bengali is the primary state language of West Bengal and the people residing in Kolkata mainly speak Bengali. The city has gained popularity for having a wide variety of scintillating places for the tourist to visit. Ranging from heritage buildings to educational institutions this city has gathered interest from people across the world. People who visit Kolkata never fail to visit places such as the Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum, National Library, Eden Gardens, Eco-Tourism park, college street, Birla Planetarium, South park cemetery, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and College street to name a few. In addition, Kolkata also has pilgrimage places to visit such as Kalighat Temple, Pareshnath Jain Temple, Belur Math, Dakishineshwar Temple and Birla Mandir. The city attracts a large number of tourists every year. In 2021, the Kolkata Airport reported the arrival of about 42,759 foreign tourists.
Tourists also enjoy being on the tram ride which has been operating since 1902. The tram service is not only the heritage of the country but also it is one of the oldest in Asia. The tram is one of the best and cheapest way modes of transportation to take a small tour of Kolkata. The depots of trams are located at Tollygunge, Gariahat, Park Circus, Khidirpur, and Kalighat to make the transportation more convenient. In addition, Kolkata also offers tram services to people which also acts legacy of Kolkata.
Kolkata also offers a plethora of lip-smacking foods be it the food served at the restaurant or the fast food. Needless to mention, Kolkata has earned its popularity for the sweet desserts it offers to the people. Bengali sweets or Mishti always deserve a special mention. Roshogolla, Sandesh, mishti doi, kalo jaam are those desserts that one can only find if they are in Kolkata. Places such as Bhim Nag and K.C Das serve the best sweets to the gourmets.

To conclude it can be said that the city where I live is indeed the city of joy. People who visit the city are enthralled by its beauty. The heritage buildings, pilgrim places, trams, to the wide variety of delectable foods, the city offers to the visitors never leave anyone in sorrow.
