Essay – Technology cannot replace manpower
Technology cannot replace manpower Essay: The term technology has been derived from two greek words ‘teche’ and ‘logos’ which means the manoeuvre, skill or technique of usage and ‘logos’ meaning the method of expression of thought and ideas. Technology has been in perusal by human beings since the inception of civilization. For instance, the creation of fire by rubbing stones and the creation of wheels from rolling down wooden logs were the first specimens of technology invented by human beings. Technology has been in use extensively since the industrial revolution of 1760 alongside human labour which marked a transition between handmade products and goods to machine-made products.
Discussion
The human species have come a long way from making wooden wheels to creating Artificial Intelligence which is arguably as efficient as the human brain. Artificial Intelligence’s ability to learn new habits and tasks resembling that of a human infant has posed the question of whether human labour can be rendered obsolete by technology.
Without an iota of doubt, technology has made the lives of human beings much easier than was previously conceivable. For instance, communication has been made easy by cellular phones for two individuals sitting in the opposite corner of the world. Automobiles such as cars and locomotives have made travelling easier and more comfortable than commuting by walking. However, it is difficult to replace manpower. The advent of self-driving cars posed a threat to the employment of chauffeurs and, traffic officials alike making their jobs obsolete. However, the demerits of self-driving cars such as Tesla like inefficiency in gauging demography and traffic have erased the possibility of unemployment of chauffeurs and traffic officials for the basic fact that self-driven cars cannot emulate human judgment. Despite the scope of human errors technology cannot replace manpower for the latter embodies basic emotions such as empathy.
Human Empathy refers to an individual’s ability to judge and assess another person’s state of mind and emotions. Technology such as artificial intelligence is incapable of replicating and learning emotions that are inherent in human beings. As such it is devoid of the ability to assess that emotions have a positive influence on human abilities. For instance, a nurse is capable of gauging a patient’s frame of mind which is conducive to her or his health which artificial intelligence cannot comprehend. It can only assess objective truths such as heart rate and glucose levels with sheer perfection but is incapable of ensuring the overall improvement of the mind.
Conclusion
To conclude, technology is an indispensable aspect of human existence as proven more than ever during the Covid-19 Pandemic. However, its ability to replace human power or manpower is improbable in near future. It is efficient in making human life easier, however, it does not replicate the ability to conceive something truly novel on its own. Human beings are superior to technology for the simple fact that it embodies emotions such as empathy that is inherent in human beings.
