The notion of Ahimsa came into existence since the time Gautam Buddha started preaching his values of Buddhism. Animal cruelty or animal abuse refers to the practice of inflicting pain on animals either by hitting them, poisoning them or killing them. Animals comprise an integral part of our ecosystem and they deserve a peaceful life too. Since they are poor dumb creatures, they fail to express their emotions and feelings. Taking advantage of their innocence human beings derive pleasure by putting them in intense agony. The most common types of animal cruelty are beating, shooting, hoarding, burning, stabbing and mutilation. We might have come across sights of animal abuse around us. As for instance, we have seen dogs being chained in fetters and kept outside, not given food and water. Or splashing water at cats who enters the house in search of foods.
Causes of animal cruelty:
Unlike heinous crimes against man, the cases of animal abuse or cruelty gets unnoticed. Man become violent towards for two reasons; either for deriving pleasure from them or for satisfy their personal needs. Animals are killed for meat, fur, leather, teeth, hoofs and horns. Their skin is used in the textile industry for making jackets and shoemaking industries for making shoes. Their teeth and horns are used as decorative items in house, which reflects aristocracy and richness. Human beings participate in committing blasphemy by annihilating the lives of innocent animals. Little do we know that the cosmetic products we apply to our skin are tested on animals. The chemicals are either directly applied on their skin or it isinjectedinto the poor soul’s skin. These cause burning rashes or itches on their skin, causing wounds. Animals also undergo medical trials which threatens their life as well. In circus, animals are forced to perform various acts beyond their wish. Their trainers abuse them by whip, muzzles, tight collars and electric prods in order to make them act. Zoos also exploit caged animals by selling them to roadside collectors. They are doing more harm to animals than good. Many times, animals are hit by fast moving vehicles and they remain lying on the ground, wounded and mutilated.
Measures to prevent cruelty to animals:
The Prevention of Cruelty to Animal act (1960) forbids any person to cause harm or inflict any kind of trouble to the animals. The act proclaims it an offense to beat, mutilate, or torture any animal or inject any harmful substance to them. It is also considered illegal to over-load or over-ride or over-drive a physically unfit animal. It is also illegitimate to engage animals in fighting or shooting them after they are released from their shackles. If an owner is found to torture his animal, by not providing food, water or shelter he is also guilty of the same heinous crime. If he leaves his diseased pet to die on the streets it is also considered a crime. Every human being needs to foster love for animals. Every pet owner has to act sensibly and teach their children to develop affection for the pets. If anyone intervenes animal abuse, he should seek help from the police or the concerned authority.
Conclusion:
Cruelty to animals has become a pernicious problem all over the nation. The government has already implemented various laws to safeguard animals and to ensure protection to them. The entire ecology will get disturbed if animals become extinct. Every human being should develop concern for pet animals, other domestic and wild animals. Children should be taught not to tease stray animals for fun. Animals should be loved and treated with benevolence.
