Difference between Echo and Reverberation
Echo
1.) Echo is a phenomenon produced due to reflection of sound wave from rigid surface.
2.) Echo is a single reflection of sound.
3.) In echo, one can hear the same sound note after some moment.
4.) Sound heard during echo is mostly sharp and clear.
5.) To produce an echo, the distance between the source of sound and the obstacle should be greater than or equal to 17 m.
6.) Human ears can memorise the sound waves for minimum of 0.1 s, hence to listen echo, sound should strikes the ear at least after 0.1 s of original sound received.
7.) Echo can be experienced easily when we shout from pick of mountains at hill stations like Mahabaleshwar.
8.) Echo is used to enhance the quality of musical sound.
Reverberation
1.) Reverberation is a phenomenon produced due to reflection of sound wave from rigid surface.
2.) Reverberation is a multiple reflection of sound.
3.) Reverberation can create distortion in hearing the sound.
4.) Sound heard due to reverberation is mostly not cleared and consist of overlapping of more than 2 sound notes.
5.) Reverberation can produce when sound waves get reflected back multiple times from walls of hall or home.
6.) When sound waves strikes on our ears in small intervals of time i.e. less than 0.1 s, its difficult to predict the sound emitted by those notes.
7.) Reverberation of sound decreases the quality of sound.
8.) So reverberation of sound can be avoided by covering the walls of cinema halls, theatre by sound absorbing cloths like curtains etc.
