Difference between Reflection of sound and absorption of sound

Difference between Reflection and absorption of sound

Reflection of sound

1.) Like light, sound also get bounced back when falls on different surfaces.

2.) Sound wave reflected back from the surfaces like concrete, walls, ceiling, bricks etc.

3.) During reflection, sound waves obeys the laws of reflection. i.e. angle of incidence and angel of reflection. (∠i =∠r)

4.) Incident wave and reflected waves are always on opposite sides of normal.

5.) Reflection of sound waves can lead to two phenomena, viz; an echo and reverberation.

6.) Echo is reflection of sound which makes us able to listen the same sound after interval of some time, when you are at hill stations like Mahabaleshwar.

7.) Reverberation of sound is the phenomenon in which the sound gets reflected back multiple times from the surface around us.

Absorption of sound

1.) Sound waves get absorbed when incident on absorptive material.

2.) Sound wave absorbed by surfaces like curtains, cushions, carpets etc.

3.) During absorption of sound, the energy of sound waves gets absorbed.

4.) During absorption of sound, kinetic energy of particles is converted into heat energy, which gets dissipates later on.

5.) Absorption of sound depends upon the material and its density.

6.) To avoid reverberation of sound, it should get absorbed so that the walls and ceiling cinema halls, theatre, auditorium should be covered with absorbing cloths, curtains etc.
