Difference between Metals and Non-metals

Metals

Non– metals

Metals are mostly present as solid at room temperature. Non- metals are mostly present As solid or gases.
Exceptional case for metal which is not solid at room temperature is gallium and mercury. These are Present as liquid at room temperature. Exceptional case for Non- metals which is not solid or Gaseous at room temperature is Bromine.
The melting point of the metals is generally high. The melting point of non metals are generally low.
The boiling point of metals are normallyhigh. The boiling points of the non – Metals are Normally low.
Exceptional case for the high melting and boiling point of the metals are – gallium and Cesium. Exceptional case for the low boiling and melting point of non- metals are – graphite and diamond.
The density of metals are usually high. The density of non – metals Are generally low.
Metals have a shiny appearance which is known As lustre. Non – metals Does not posses lustre. It is Non – lustrous except the Iodine.
Metals are generally Hard. They have the quality of hardness, strength and toughness. Non – metals Are generally weak. Yet they are solid but not so hard. These are generally soft.
Exceptional case for the hardness of the metals are – sodium and potassium. Exceptional case for the softness of the non metal is diamond.
Metals are malleable i.e. it has the property that metal can be beaten into a thin sheet. Non metals are not malleable. It does not has property to drawn into sheets.
Metals are ductile. I.e. it can be drawn into a thin long wire. For example gold and silver can drawn into an long thin wires. Non- metals are not ductile. They can not form a thin wire.
Metals are good conductor of heat . Non – metals are bad conductor of heat.
Metals are good conductor of electricity. They are conductors. Non – metals Are bad conductor of electricity. They are insulators. But the exception is Graphite.
Metals have property of Producingsonorous sound. Non – metals Don’t Have the property of Producing sonorous sound.
Examples of metals – copper, iron, gold, silver etc. Examples of non metals are –

Graphite, Bromine, Iodine.
