English Paper – 1
Section – A
(1) Read the following passage carefully:
An Encounter
(1) It took us about twenty minutes to reach the ruin, which was probably an old hunting lodge put up by a Rajput when game was plentiful.
(2) The gate of the lodge was blocked with rubble, but part of the wall had fallen in, and we climbed through the gap and found ourselves in a stone-paved courtyard in the centre of which stood a dry, disused fountain. A small peepal tree was growing from cracks in the floor of the fountain. We crossed the courtyard to the main structure, and then Daljit stopped and asked: “Do you smell something, Rusty?”
(3) “Yes,” I said. “Curry.”
This was the last thing we expected to find. It meant the ruin was inhabited. “Hello! Anybody home?” we called aloud but no one responded. The tempting smell of the curry directed us to a little enclosure where hot lunch awaited us. “Halt!” a glaring voice warned again. “Who is it?” “I am the ghost of the ruin. I am hungry. This is my food and no one shall eat it.”
(4) Daljit gave me a horrible look and shouted, “Rusty, run….” And he ran away. I was so dumbstruck that I could not move an inch. Being alone in the company of the ghost, I trembled with fear. “Run away. Didn’t you hear?”, the invisible ghost reprimanded. Mustering up the little courage I had, I confronted it. “No, I will not leave till you show up. I must see you.” My command elicited footsteps behind my back and I turned instantly. “Amit?” “You man Rusty! Let us enjoy the curry while I give you the ghost story.” Amit told me that he had overheard our plan to explore the ruin and planned this prank to scare us. It was partially successful.
(5) After enjoying the sumptuous curry, Amit and I went back to the hostel. At dinner table, a guilty Daljit kept avoiding me for having left me alone with the ghost. And I, well, I had the last laugh.
