(2) Answer the following questions:
(1) ‘Resources do not exist; they are made.’ Explain this statement.
Answer :
Any naturally existing thing becomes useful to human beings only when they use it, i.e., not everything which is existing naturally is called as natural resource, but when human beings extract and utilize these resources to a more useful form then they are called natural resource. Because of this it is said that resources do not exist; they are made.
(2) What are the differences between renewable and non-renewable resources?
Answer :
Renewable resources are those resources which are replenishable by natural processes. For example, water cycle, the continuous evaporation of water from the earth’s surface and precipitation in the form of rain makes a continuous water cycle. Non-renewable resources are those resources which are not replenished by nature. They are available in limited quantities. For example, mineral oil, iron ore, coal etc. These resources do not renew themselves and they are exhaustible in nature.
(3) Why is it important to manage resources?
Answer :
It is important to manage resources because of their constant depletion and pollution. Renewable resources are becoming polluted like water pollution, soil pollution, air pollution etc. Whereas non-renewable resources are depleting at a fast rate. Like crude oil, natural gas, minerals etc. Because of this resource management has become an important topic in recent years.
(4) What resources depend on water resources?
Answer :
Water is a natural renewable resource. Many resources and human activities are dependent on it. Like-
- Drinking water requirements
- Hydroelectricity generation
- Forestry, agriculture, irrigation, and allied activities
- Fishing and aquaculture
- Transportation
- Various industries
(3) Match columns I and II and choose the correct alternative from the options given below:
(1) Coal | (A) Cyclic renewable |
(2) Iron ore | (B) Renewable |
(3) Animals | (C) Continuous renewable |
(4) Air | (D) Non-renewable |
(a) 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D
(b) 1-D, 2-B, 3-C, 4-A
(c) 1-D, 2-B, 3-A, 4-C
(d) 1-D, 2-A, 3-B, 4-C.
Answer :
Coal → non-renewable
Iron ore → cyclic renewable
Animals → renewable
Air → continuous renewable

Long answer
1.) Explain the Neolithic revolution.
The Neolithic revolution started 10000 years ago. It was the period in which human beings started domestication of animals and settled agriculture which led to the development of human settlements. Various other economic activities developed like breaking clay, spinning wheel for making clothes, making copper and brass articles etc

There was a difference between the belief system of the industrialized nations and the tribal dominated colonies which was the major reason for the clash between the industrialized nations and their colonies. The tribal dominated colonies tried to protect their natural resources like forest and water bodies to protect their livelihood while the colonists tried to exploit the natural resources of the region and cut down forest for supplying raw material to the native industries.

Rachel Carson in his work the silent spring wrote about the harmful effects of pesticides on the environment which also impacts human beings. He explained that the DDT used to kill mosquitoes, when contaminating the water bodies it gets accumulated in the fish tissues leading to the death of marine life. When these dead fishes are consumed by the birds and human beings leads to the toxic effect of DDT on human beings also.
