Comprehension II
1.) What similes does Romeo use to convey Juliet’s beauty?
Ans. It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
As a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear
This is the first simile used by Romeo to describe Juliet’s beauty. He is so astonished by Juliet’s beauty that he feels that she appears like a jewel in the ear of an Ethiope’s ear. Ethiope is an African queen. Her beauty is so bright and charming that she stands out among all the people. He is in love with her the moment he sees her. Her bright beauty lightens up the dark night.
Another simile used is
So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows
As yonder lady o’er her fellow shows
In the above lines Romeo compares his love Juliet with dove. Dove signifies love and beauty and for Romoe, Juliet is the symbol of love and beauty. For him other women appear to be like crows, which signify ugliness. Juliet is like the dove in the middle of the crows, which stands out and outshines everyone. Romeo is so deeply enchanted with the beauty of Juliet.
2.) How, according to Juliet, would Romeo be immortalized to the world?
Ans. Juliet’s love for Romeo is beyond physical attraction. She expects Romeo to be a star in the sky after his death. She wants him to shine like a bright star even after his death in this way she wants him to be immortalized. She expects him to be a star that cut into small glitters, and they all shine together which would make the sky shine brighter and appear beautiful than the day.
Comprehension III
1.) Comment on the contrasting imagery in the poem. What purpose does it serve in highlighting the intensity of love?
Ans. Shakespeare uses imagery in an apt way in this poem. He has used two contrasting images i.e. day-night and black- white. The contrasting day-night image depicts the intensity of love in the day and in the night. The night represents love, peace and romance whereas the day represents as a time for the lovers to meet and plan their night time for romance. In the other contrasting image of black-white, Shakespeare has the black image for the crows and the white ones for the dove. Black represents ugliness whereas white represents beauty and calmness. The most important thing is that white cannot shine brightly without black. When white color is in the black color, only then it shines brightly and looks beautiful. Also these colors represent the happiness and sadness that came when people are in love, so love is nothing but the combination of pain and pleasure. Both pain and pleasure are interconnected with each other and without each other they serve no meaning.
2.) Between Romeo and Juliet, whose love, do you think, is more passionate and intense?
Ans. Both Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other is beyond words could express. Both are deeply, head over heels in love with each other. But Juliet’s love is deeper than Romeo’s because she wants her love to be cut into little stars and shine bright in the sky. She wants her love to be immortal. Her love is beyond any physical attraction and lust. Romeo, on the other hand is very much attracted towards Juliet and he is taken back by the beauty of Juliet. For him, even Rosaline ,with whom he was actually in love with before he saw Juliet, doesn’t appear beautiful. For him, Juliet is like a dove in the middle of the crows. He loves her a lot but Juliet’s love is philosophical and unconditional.
