- The Nun – Kun mountain massif consists of a pair of Himalayans peaks, namely Nun, 7135 m (23409 ft) & its neighbour peak kun 7077 m (23218 ft).
- Nun is the highest peak in the part of the Himalayan range lying on the Indian side of the line of control in Jammu & Kashmir.
- There are comparatively the higher peaks in the Indian part of the Karakoram Range.
- The massif is located near the Suru Valley about 100 km (60 mi) east of Srinagar the capital of Kashmir.
- Kun peak is located north of Nun & is Separated from it by a Snowy plateau of about 4 km in length.
- Mountaineering is a common activity in the Nun kun peak.
- Early exploration of the kun peaks included a visit in 1898 & three visits by Arthur Neve, in 1902, 1904 & 1910.
- In 1903, Dutch mountaineer Dr. H. Hillem investigated the Nun Kun peaks & discovered the high plateau between the peaks; he reached an attitude of 6400 m (21,000 Ft) on Nun.
- After unsuccessful attempts to climb the Nun kun peaks in 1934 & 1937, the first ascent of Nun was in 1953 by a French – Swiss – India – Sherpa team supervised by Bernard Pierre & Pierre Vittoz, across the west ridge.
- Fifty – Eight years passed before the Second recorded attempt on the Nun Kun peaks which resulted in a trimphant ascent by an expedition from the India Army.
- In 1906, noted explorer couple William Hunter workman & fanny Bullock workman claimed an ascent of pinnacle peak.
- They also touched extensively through the Nun kun peaks & created a map & few tringometrical points were given for the region, so that the map they produced was not convenient to be used.
- The Nun Kun peaks succession pair comprised Vittoz a Moravian missionary to the Tibetans & an experienced alpinist & Claude Kogan, a pioneering female mountaineer.
- Since then, other routes have been pioneered.
- Six climbers first ascended the north west face in 1977 from a Czech expedition.
- Italian mountaineer Mario Piacenza made the first ascent of kun in 1913 via the north east ridge.
- The massif is most conveniently accessed from the road connecting Kargil & Leh.
- The mountain has the North ridge, the longest that Splits into North West & North East ridge at cllound 500 m below the Summit.
- The North West ridge splits the Kangriz Glacier into the west & East.
