Wonderful Waste! Summary
The story “wonderful taste” is a very beautiful story about the kingdom of Travancore. How the beautiful & tasty dish ‘Aerial’ was made for the first time is very beautifully depicted in the story.
The first two Para’s of the story “Once the Maharaja . . . . . away throws light on the kingdom of Travancore where the king had organised a dinner feast for the people. In the afternoon the Maharaja went to the kitchen to see the preparations for the dinner. The king found a basket full of vegetable scraps lying on the floor. The king asked the cook what is he going to do with the vegetable scarps. The cook replied that they are waste & will be thrown away.
The third & fourth Para of the story “you cannot . . . . . cleaned them well”, highlight the king’s demand of not wasting the scraps of vegetables. The king order’s the cook to find a way to use the scraps. The cook was in a dilemma as to what he should do. He kept thinking for sometime. Suddenly an idea flashed his mind. He cleaned the vegetables bits & washed them thoroughly.
The fifth & sixth Para of the story “Then he cut . . . . . Curry leaves”. Mentions the procedure of making the dish. The cook cut strips of the vegetable scraps & placed them in a huge pot. Likewise he added some fresh coconut, green chilies & garlic. Lastly he added some curd & curry leaves & also some coconut oil. He could feel a tempting smell coming from the dish he prepared.
The seventh, eighth & ninth Para concludes the story. The last paras present the tempting dish to the guests. The people were extremely impressed by the dish & wanted to know the game. The cook thought & finally named the dish ‘Avial’.
The story is a wonderful piece which highlights how creative can a waste be. A waste basket full of vegetables scraps were turned into a delicious curry.
