Apata leaves on the day of Vijayadashami
One another because receives apata leaves on the day of Vijayadashami. There is a tale behind this custom, and it goes something like this since the Guru-disciple tradition has existed for a very long time. Kautsa approached Guruji once the study was over, but the guru refused, saying that Vatsa Vidya—which means knowledge is for imparting knowledge and giving—means that I don’t want to give it its original meaning. Therefore, I don’t want Gurudakshina.Kavach went to the city to get gold coins but it was not as easy as he thought it was so the festival went to Raghu Raja.
However, Guruji reminded him that if he had given him knowledge of 14 sciences then he should have given him fourteen crores of gold coins. And he requested 14 crores in gold coins, but the Brahmins had already received the full treasure before he made his demand. Kubera was dousing the Apta and Shami trees with golden coins while they were outside of Raghuraja’s cities. When Raghuraja asked to take the gold coins, he took 14 crore coins and asked Varantatu to take them as well. He then asked Varantatu to pile the remaining gold coins under the Apta and Shami trees and asked everyone living there to take them to the sea. That day was Vijayadashami, so an unexpected opportunity to become wealthy presented itself. City dwellers as a whole adored the Apatya and Shami tree, and ever since, its leaves have been traded. This is what we commemorate as the Vijayadashami holiday, and as a result, Apatya leaves are handed to everyone on this day.
