The Captive Sailor and His Birds Story Writing: During the 18th century the British and the French were always engaged in war. The main reason of war was for the control of colonies and lands. The War of 1778, also known as the Bourbon War in Britain, was an English soldier named Captain Charleswood who was very courageous. He had fought lots of war and was renowned for his bravery. During the Bourbon War, Captain Charleswood fought with valor but unfortunately, he and his men were caught in the hands of French army during the end of the war. The French army confiscated all the weapons and belongings of the British army and transported to the famous and notorious prison of France, the Bastille.
The Bastille prison was famous for its colossal walls and tortures on the prisoners. Captain Charleswood was kept prison in a solitary chamber which had only one window on height from which very little light and sun came. The cell was very dark and cold and the Captain was also regularly tortured by French soldiers for secrets of British army. Captain Charleswood withstood the continuous beating and loathing fearlessly but slowly his strength was going away. The French army was inhuman in their tortures, they did not allow proper food and rest to the prisoners and were made to work also like slaves across the prison grounds. The strength of body and mind of the British soldiers was slowly dwindling and their hope of freedom became bleak each day.
Many days passed by, months turned into years, the environment of the prison was same for the captives. The soldiers were assigned with duties of clearing the prison grounds, had to wash and mop the floors of the cells even in freezing weather, shovelice from the concrete floor every day. They were denied proper food and rest even after toiling the whole day. The inhuman torture slowly started to make the prisoners sick. They were unable to endure the pain continuously. The prisoners were not given any treatment for their illness and eventually few unfortunate British soldiers died. Captain Charleswood and few of his fellow soldiers who were struggling against all odds to stay alive.
The war was draining wealth and the common people were getting agitated with theirpoor situation and started to revolts started in both nations. At last, the war came to an end and a treaty was signed between the two countries. Finally, the English soldiers were set free and they sailed back to their country. Captain Charleswood was overwhelmed to become a free man once again and reach his loved ones.
One day in the market, he found a bird-seller’s shop. He saw lots of birds caged in wretched condition and the sight reminded him of the pain of his prison days. He immediately purchased the cages and let all the birds fly to freedom. Everyone around him was surprised but he knew torment of captivity. He had learnt the value of freedom.
