Telanagana State Board Class 8 Biology Chapter 2 Cell The Basic Unit of Life Solution:
(1) Who discovered the cell for the first time? What procedure did he follwo?
Ans: – Roberst Hooke in 1665, a British scientists discovered the cell for the first time.
Robert Hooke observed thin slices of cork (Soft bark from oak tree) under a simple magnifying device which he had made himself. He observed that the cork resembled the structure of a honey comb consisting of many empty spaces or empty box like structures. He thought that the cork was made up of very small cavities. Robert Hooke called these cavities as ‘Cells’.
(2) Name the factors on which shape of the cell depend?
Ans: – Cell membrane, which a shape of the cells and it selectively allows substances to pass through it, in and out of the cell.
But in the case of onion, plant cell get shape as it have cell wall or the factor on which shape the well depends in cell wall.
(3) Distinguish between unicellular and multi cellular organisms.
Ans: – single called animals are called unicellular organisms. Animals like – Amoeba, paramecium, chlamy domonas etc…. all are unicellular organisms.
This single cell is capable of performing all the life processes like obtaining food, respiration, excretion, growth and reproduction.
Living organisms having more than one cell are caked multicellular organisms.
Examples – All plants and all humans.
Basic life processes in multicellular organisms are carries out by different types of cells.
(4) How will you prepare slide without drying quickly?
Ans: – Preparing of slide without drying quickly –
(1) Take a slide and keep a very thin slice of onion peel on it. Then if you add glycerine and some water on it.
(2) Glycerine helps to prepare slide without drying quickle.
(5) Beekshith said that “we can’t see cells with unaided eye.” Is the statement true or false? Explain
Ans: – This statement is true. Because, cells are to small that they can not be seen through naked eye. Cells are measures in micrometers. The cells can be seen through a microscope. The smallest cell 0.1 to 0.5 micrometrs is found in Bacteria.
(6) Correct the statement and if necessary rewrite.
(a) Cell well is essential in plant cells.
Ans: – Correct statement
(b) Nucleus controls cell activity.
(c) Unicellular organisms perform all life processes like respiration, excretion, growth and reproduction.
Ans: – Both the statements are correct
(d) To observe nucleus and organelles clearly, staining is not necessary.
Ans: – The correct sentence will be –
To observe nucleus and organelles clearly staining is necessary.
(7) Describe the functions of necleus?
Ans: – All cells regulates actively by the nucleus. Nucleus shapes looks like round. Mainly nucleus is present more or less at the centre of the cell. The jelly like substance between the nucleus and the cell membrance is called cytoplasm.
Nucleus plays an important role in the cellualr reproduction. It controls the functioning of whole cell. Nucleus contains chromosomes. So it carried genetic materials nucleus controlles the cell division. So nucleus is known as cell control centre.
(8) What is different between cells in onion peel and cells in spinach?
Ans: –
Spinach |
Onion peels |
(1) They have chlorophyll (Chlorophyll is a pigeneant) |
(1) They donts have Chlorophyll |
(2) They have a chloroplast |
(2) They don’t have chloroplast. They have colorless plastics. |
(3) Spinach have color. Photosynthesis Occur. |
(3) Here no photosynthesis occurs. |
(9) Label parts of diagrammes given in page 25, And identify which is plant cell and which is animal cell.
(10) What questions will you pose to know about diversity in cells.
Ans: –
(i) What is a cell?
(ii) Why do the cell of plants and animals are not same?
(iii) Why can’t we see the cell structure with closed eye?
(iv) On what basis cells are classified?
(v) Why nucleus is important for cells?
(vi) Why do the different cells are in different shapes?
(11) If you want to know about unicellular and multicellular organisms. What questions will you pose?
Ans: –
(i) What is unicellular organism and what is multicellular organisms?
(ii) What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular organisms?
(iii) does a single cell in unicellular organisms perform all the functions of the body?
(iv) Name few unicellular organisms and multicellular organisms.
(14) Make sketches of animal and plant cells which you observe under microscope?
Ans: –
(15) Ameer said “Bigger onion has larger cells when compared to the cells of smaller onion”. Do you agree with his statement or not?
Explain why?
Ans: – No, this statement is not true.
The size of any cell does not change with the shape or size of the body in tree this cells presents. So cell size is always constant and permanent.
(16) How do you appreciate the feet animals human beings and trees are made of cells. Which are very small and we can look at them through microscope
Ans: – We can see the cells of animals human beings and trees through microscope. By seeing both the cells of an animals and plants, then we find there is a difference between them. We find that in plant cells chlorophyll is present but in animal cell is not present any Chlorophyll. As in same human beings cells do not contains any chlorophyll. So we can prepare different slides animals, human beings and trees and observed all these differences with the help of microscope. We are also able to see the smallest units of cell. So microscope has revealed many hidden secrets.
(17) Deepok said “A plant can’t stand erect without cell wall?” do you support this statement?
Ans: – “a plant can’t stand erect without cell wall” because cell wall helps for the plant support and it gives rigidity to the cell, so the plant body can stand strongly.
So the cell wall can provide mechanical strength to the plant. The plant cell provides perfect shape to the plant cell and also it gives the plant cell support also.
