Speech on Gandhi Jayanti
INTRODUCTION
A very good morning to the respected principal, teacher and all my dear friends. Today we all have gathered here to celebrate Gandhi jayanti.
BODY
Gandhi jayanti is celebrated annually on 2nd October to mark the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He is also called by the name of ‘bapu’ or ‘father of nation’. Gandhiji was born into a ModhBania family (Gujarati Hindu family) in Porbandar. Gandhiji had done his primary education at Porbandar and higher secondary education from the University of Bombay in 1887. After that he went for London to pursue the law degree, where he joined inner temple (one of the famous law college of London). After completing the degree he came to India and set up a law practice in Bombay. But he get little much success. He went for South Africa with his wife and children. In South Africa while travelling in train, he was discriminated and beaten by a stagecoach driver and European passenger. That Journey make a turning point in the life of Gandhiji. He started developing and teaching the concept of Satyagraha, ahimsa and convert him to a great powerful leader ( a socialist, a political leader, philosopher) who had done many massive movements, strike. His journey was started from Africa where he had fought for the discrimination of the Asian (black people) in Africa. He was the founder of Indian National Congress on 22 August 1894. Returning to India in 1915 he organized Satyagraha movements in various places such as in 1917 in Champaran district of Bihar for peasants to struggle against the plantation system, then in 1917 Kheda district of Gujarat to support peasants who could not pay the revenue. In 1918, he went to Ahmedabad to organised a Satyagraha movement amongst the cotton milk worker. Also he had done many more movements such as non-cooperation movement in which massive participation was seen and boycott the British government. In next he had done civil disobedience movement, quit India movement, salt march, Simon commission’s. Many act were done by Mahatma Gandhi such as Rowlatt act in 1919. He believed in truth, non-violence, struggle against injustice. Many books were published on Gandhiji such as autobiography of Mahatma Gandhiji(The story of my experiment with truth), pathway to God, Conquest to self, Gandhi before India by Ramchandra Guha, the good boatman by Rammohan Gandhi, Gandhi prisoner of hope by Judith M. brown & I am Gandhi by Brad Meltzer etc. One of the famous lines said by Gandhiji was “live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever”. Gandhiji is the inspiration of many people due to this philosophy of non-violence, faith in self, forgiveness, strength of character, truth, learning from mistake and the important one Swadeshi. ‘International Gandhi peace’ prize named after Mahatma Gandhi was awarded annually by government of India as a tribute by Gandhiji. Gandhiji was shot on 30 January 1948 by the Hindu extremist Nathuramgodse because he think that Gandhi ji had betrayed the Hindu religion by supporting the Muslim. Gandhiji last words on his lips was ‘Hey Ram’ .
CONCLUSION
At last I want to say that Gandhi ji was a great leader and taught us the way of ahinsa and co-operation with everyone.
