Sorting Materials into Groups Summary
The process of arranging data in a meaningful order, so that you can analyze it more effectively.
- Properties of materials
1.) Appearance Materials can be classified on the basis of how they look or appear.
A.) Lustrous- Some materials are shiny or lustrous in appearance. All metals are lustrous, some are more and some are less.
B.) Non Lustrous- Some materials are non lustrous or non shiny or appearance dull because of action of air and moisture.
2.) Hardness Materials can be classified on the basis of hardness.
A.) Soft- The materials that can be compressed are called soft .example cotton, sponge.
B.) Hard- The materials that cannot be compressed are called hard.
3.) Soluble or insoluble A. Soluble- Substance that completely dissolve in water are called soluble substance. Example sugar , salt.
B.) In soluble- Substance that do not dissolve in water are called insoluble substance. Examples sand, chalk powder.
4.) Miscible and immiscible-
A.) Miscible- Liquids that mix well with . one another Example milk and water.
B.) Immiscible- Liquids that do not mix with one another. Example water and oil.
5.) Objects may float or sink in a water-
Material which sink in the water denser than water example stone thrown into pond.
Density of a substance is defined as mass per unit volume.
6.) Visibility-
A.) Transparent- This substance or materials through which things can be seen easily are called transparent example glass, water.
B.) Translucent- The materials through which objects can be seen but not clearly are called translucent
example colored glass, oil paper.
C.) Opaque- The materials through which you can’t able to see are called OPEC examples stone, wood.
7.) Electricity-
A.) Good conductor- Metals are good conductor. ( Electricity can pass through it.)
B.) Bad conductor- Non metals electricity can’t pass through it.
8.) Heat-
A.) Good conductor- Metals are good conductor.
B.) Bad conductor- Non metals are bad conductor.
Solute, Solvent and Solution.
- The substance which dissolves in a water are called solute.
- A solvent is substance that dissolved in the solute to make the solution.
- The mixture of solute and solvent is called solution.
Materials which are similar in one or two ways can be put in one group.
Things made from wood, fiber, metal, ceramic, glass, plastic rubber and liquid such as oil.
Advantages set of classification
1.) Help to understand similarities and dissimilarities among objects.
2.) Help in identification of object.
3.) Helps in locating things.
4.) Helps in sorting things
