- Meter
Hello everyone we are familiar that the length is fundamental quantity which doesn’t depends upon any other quantity for its measurement. The distance between any points is referred to length. Before some decades in US customary system of measurement, the most common units of distance are inches, feet, yards, and miles etc.
In modern science, the basic SI unit of length is derived from the study of light and named as meter.
Meter is defined as the distance travelled by light is in the time interval of
1/299792458 ≈ 1/(3× 108) seconds.
Where, 3 × 108 m/s is the speed of light in vacuum.
The conversion factor between meter and yard can be,
1.0936 yard = 1 meter.
The most common unit of length is kilometre. Kilometre measured the long distance lengths e.g. distance between two cities, countries etc.
Important Faq on SI unit of Length
Q.1) What do you mean by light year?
Answer: Light year is the large unit used to measure the distances between astronomical objects, celestial bodies, galaxies etc.
Light is the distance travelled by light in one year. It can be expressed in meters as,
1 light year = 9.46×1012 km = 9.46×1015 m
Q.2) What are the commonly used prefixes for measurement of length?
Answer:
- 1 mile = 1760 yards = 1609.34 m
1 yard = 3 feet= 0.9144 m
1 foot = 12 inches = 0.30479928 m - 1 decimeter = 0.1 meter
1 Centimetre (cm) = 10 Millimetres (mm)
1 centimeter = 0.01 meter
1 millimeter = 0.001 meter
