According to Ohm’s law, potential difference across the terminals of metal wire is directly proportional to current flowing through the wire.
∴ V = I R
∴ R = V/ I
Where, R = resistance of wire
On the basis of resistance we classify the materials into three categories i.e. conductor, insulator and semiconductor. The ability of metal wire to flow the current is decided by its conductance.
Conductance is defined as the reciprocal of resistance. It is denoted by ‘C’ or ‘G’
∴σ = 1/R
∴σ = 1/(V/ I)
∴σ = I/V
As the SI unit of resistance is ohm (Ω), SI unit of conductance is then 1/ Ω. It is also read as reverse of ohm i.e. mho

He performed some series of experiments for studying the electric properties of material and proposed the concept of electroplating process.
Due to his extra ordinary work, his name is given as unit of conductance. Hence SI unit of conductance is written as siemens, its symbol is ‘S’.
