Lal bahadur Shastri was born on 2 October, 1904 and shares birthday with Mahatma Gandhi. His father’s name was sharda Prasad and mother’s name was ramdulari devi. He lost his father at one year age and his mother had to settle down at her father’s house with him and his other two sisters. Lal bahadur shastri was very honest and hardworking person since childhood. He acquired great qualities like patience, courage, self-control, courtesy, and love for adventure in his childhood and education life. He compromised his education life for serving in the freedom movement where he was an active participant. He was motivated since boyhood to take part in freedom struggle movement of India. He got impressed through the speech of Mahatma Gandhi at the foundation day of Benaras Hindu University and he followed Gandhiji’s philosophy to be part of India’s freedom movement. For his active participation he had to go jail many times. He always believed on the two component self-reliance and self-sustenance as the ways if building strong nation.
Lal bahadur shastri wished to be remembered by his country people for his works not just by some mere speech and promises. He showed strong opposition to the prevalent caste system in India for which he stopped using his surname after graduation and got surname shastri. When India became independent in 1947 he got the position of minister in transport and home ministry. After that he got the responsibility for railway ministry. After pander Jawaharlal Nehru’s death, shastri succeeded him in the opposition of prime minister for short duration of 18 months. He got his significant achievements of life after the victory of Pakistan in 1965. He died by a severe heart attack on 11 January, 1966. He was a great personality of India which brought several changes in India through his contribution. He was an eminent leader and rewarded by ‘Bharat Ratna’. He was always against dowry system and showed opposition. He managed severe problems of India like unemployment, food shortage, and poverty with his actions. To reduce long-term food shortage he asked experts to produce effective strategy which called green revolution.
